Hi Folks,
I am a long time lurker and first time poster, I have been playing guitar for about 6-7 years and have reciently started mandolin and I have found the conversion to extremely enjoyable. My question is: In a free style jam setting I understand that a major scale sounds good over most I, IV, V chord progressions.

What about a vi, I, IV, V progression (eg. Am, C, F, G), would the base assumption(non-David Grisman, Sam Bush etc) be a C minor harmonic scale or would the 3b clash with the chords. How about Am pentatonic scale? Dorian mode?

PS - I understand that different scales would work, I am looking for a starting point and basic rules of thumb that I can flex and expand as I get better.

Thanks
