I'm not an authority on the genre, but there are several nice recordings listed in these two threads:

And while not Gypsy Jazz per se (I think it might be more accurately labelled as just "Gypsy"), the oft recommended Gypsy Mandolin! (http://www.amazon.com/Gypsy-Mandolin-Extraordinary-Artistry-Howard/dp/B000S9BYKS) by Howard Frye is a thoroughly enjoyable and well performed recording.

Check out Harmonious Wail, my all time favorite. They do a lot of Django and gypsy jazz, but do other things too. There should be a selection from them on the MP3 page, also go to wail.com.

My solo debut album, which will be coming out in the next coming months, will feature mandolin in a modern gypsy jazz style (including standards minor swing, sweet georgia brown, I can't give you anything but love, and nuages as well as many originals). OK. I'll ask a noobie question. Something that I've wondered about, having listened to a lot of Djan. and his followers, is what kind of scale patterns should someone practice to make sense of improvising in his style? Listening to DJ players play, it seems like a jumble of notes, though I imagine they are following standard jazz overlays...it's just that they sound "greek" to me...I have not gone out to find the perfect Django book, given my focus on simpler 'American Songbook' stuff when I play jazz.

Since the i-vibe is going to start delving into DR, what's a practice regimen to start the day, without just playing tunes? Or is there somewhere on the internet that covers that? (I'll go look, but I bet someone like Bruce C and Donnie might have thoughts here. Oliver, what do you work on in your warmups?

Oliver, nice video of your performance, and nice work. It looks like your sound guy forgot to record the concert in 48kHz, which you need to do to sync up with video. I've had to match 44Khz live recordings to video and it's a painful process. Make sure to tell the sound guy to switch to 48 if you are doing video. Most recorders have that option. Hope to play Panhandle Rag with you at some point if I get over to DE! Bob Wills on a Selmer...fun...That's more my style...

I just put up a few sample tracks from my upcoming album "Sleepless", on my myspace page (http://www.myspace.com/jasonanick)...."Le Feu Le Plus Beau" is a Gypsy jazz style waltz I composed for acoustic mandolin..."Tears" a is Django Tune I arranged....there is an acoutic mando solo on that track as well..."Sleepless" is an original that doesn't feature mando but it does feature guitar great John Jorgenson! Howard Frye "Gypsy Mandolin" Is splendid. It isn't exactly 'Gypsy Swing' but he is a clean,clear,intelligent player and plays a lot of tunes you should know.

I can also highly recommend the MaMaVig record that's downloadable there - Frank on guitar, Jamie Masefield on mando, and Gary Mazzaroppi (sp?) on the big bass. Great string trio, and very Django inflected/inspired, but not strict gypsy jazz.

I just listened to your sample tracks. Bravo! What an amazing debut for your first solo album! I expect to be a customer and to keep an ear on your discography. I can certainly hear the Grappelli influence. Nice to see a young guy pick up the torch. The mandolin playing is very clean and in the groove. Thanks for sharing it here.
