Recencently purchased a fender mandolin and felt the action was too high . After I had lowered the bridge i noticed that the bass strings were not offset as much as they were . My question is , what is the proper string height?

I'm certainly not an expert, but from my limited experience it seems to be yet another answer of "personal preference". Certainly, if the strings are too low, they'll buzz. If they're way too high, then it will be very difficult to play. Generally, the trade-off is higher bridge = more downward pressure on the soundboard = more sound VS. lower bridge = strings closer to the fretboard = easier to play = easier to get a cleaner tone.

More of an art than a science then, when it comes to "what is the proper string height?".

Hope that helps. Good luck tinkering! (Just don't cause any permanent damage!)
