If you love the old brother duos, Monroes, Stanleys, Louvins... you do not want to miss a rare, pre-announced duo show in NYC this Tuesday. Michael Daves (guitar w Tony Trischka) and Chris Thile (local picker - some real potential) at the Rockwood Music Hall (http://www.rockwoodmusichall.com/). These two have been playing together for a few years now, and they just keep getting better. It's sick, mind-reading, finish the other guy's musical thoughts, virtuosity.

I could go on, but where to begin? These boys are in a league of their own at this point.

Quote from Brad - " Chris Thile (local picker - some real potential)........". Yeah, right Brad !!. If i wasn't 'a ways off' (so to speak) i'd be first in the queue. It would be interesting to find out if they plan to record together,

It seems likely that they'll record together one of these days, and think it will be great. Skaggs and Rice kind of great. (I mean, very different than S&R, but of equal ground shakingness) Really people... this will be worth traveling for. With tickets at $10, you can afford an airplane ticket.

Wish I could be there, I'd love to hear that.

Well, it was a rip-roaring good time, for those who could make it. Lots of familiar faces of the folks that support BG and OT music around here, even when hot shots like Chris aren't on the bill. A memorable, dual mandolin Old Dangerfield - and Chris reciprocated by picking up the guitar for a dual guitar instrumental (what was that tune anyway?). Lots of Monroe, Louvin bros., Ookpik waltz that hushed the room, and plenty of numbers that had folks howling. Catch Michael, out with Tony Trischka, or drop by NYC. He plays a solo show at the Rockwood, every Tuesday night.

I was there - it was a fantastic night of music. They played two sets with a fine selection of brother duets, fiddle tunes, and bluegrass classics.

Michael Daves arrived with two guitars and a mando, an old Deluxe that looked like a beater. At first, only Chris Thile played it (as an alternative to his Gibson F4) - out of tune and somewhat boomy - I couldn't understand what he liked about it. Part way through the night he commented that switching between the two mandos was like switching between AM and FM - of course, the Gibson was the FM.

Later, Thile picked up Daves' guitar and they played a thrilling guitar duet.

And the whole evening was generously filled with the best bluegrass picking around.

Here are some snaps of (1) the Deluxe mandolin, and (2) the guitar duet.
