Hi,
Just curious....
do all mandolins have truss rods ?
would my 83 Flatiron A5-2 have one? it doesn't have a truss rod cover!
are there adjustable and non-adjustable truss rods?

just curious

Many mandolins do not have truss rods. Some have them, but are non-adjustable, so there is no cover plate. A few have an adjustable rod but the adjusting nut is inside the body where the neck meets the body. I believe your flatiron may be the second case: there is a truss rod but it is not adjustable.

A truss rod is adjustable through a pocket in the neck or the body (not so common) and can be single action (only adjusts one way) or dual action (can adjust the bow forward and back). Many mandos don't have a truss rod or have a neck strengthener/insert. Most neck strengtheners are carbon fiber but steel bar or box stock, or ebony/other hard woods have been used. Some of the early Gibson oval holes had a cherry insert.

Kevin - If you can't find out from the 'Cafe, why not contact the 'Flatiron' man himself,Bruce Weber.
You can contact him through his Weber site. He's a very helpful guy & would give you the info.that you're after as nobody else can,
