Here's a link to the website that should answer all those pesky questions about what's happening.....http://www.tenorguitargathering.com/home.cfm

All the best!

That looks like a blast. However I will be at Mt. Airy that weekend. The most tenor guitars I was in a session with was three. Maybe next year!

Thanks Paul. Very helpful information. I'm trying to arrange my schedule to make it to the Friday events. Just bought my first tenor and an anxious to learn more.

FYI, seems the Links page's links aren't working. Glad to see you included Thiel's Music on the list: it's a wonderful store with helpful staff.

How easy is it to get there from a major airport?

Portland International Airport (PDX) is the nearest major airport. It's about a 2-hour drive to Astoria.

Well, it was great to see Paul and mandroid there. Marcy Marxer showed up all the way from D.C. with a prototype National Triolian reissue! I think we had three other Triolians including mine, plus a nice late-'30s nickel-plated National with a sandblasted design. Paul brought a bunch of his instruments. I am justly accused of spending more time on fiddle and 5-string e-mando (one of Paul's) than I did on tenor. Of course, during a late-night jam session/gig at the Voodoo Room, I couldn't play my tenor because I had loaned it to Spider Murphy, another pro player who drove up from Cripple Creek, Colorado. Spider broke two A strings in quick succession on his Regal and finished the gig on my Triolian. Never heard it sound better.

Any other closet Cafe members present at the Tenor Gathering?

Oh dear, here's a clip (http://web.me.com/joshuare/Mark_Josephs_Tenor_Guitar_Gathering/Movie.html) of Marcy Marxer ripping it up on a Martin tenor (in Chicago tuning) ... correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the tenor in question is the former property of Nick Reynolds of the Kingston Trio, and now belongs to his son Josh. Fair warning: if you don't stop the video after Marcy finishes, you'll be subjected to me, Paul and mandroid among others, jamming somewhat sloppily on Blind Willie McTell's "Broke Down Engine Blues." Paul and I are both playing Arrow instruments; mandroid plays his Greg Biller mandola. Don't recall whether anyone took a break on tenor guitar during that particular number.

Thank goodness that's one inadequacy I can actually fix. How about this?

But can you play Djembe? :)

Did anyone bring any electric tenors?

I'll never have a beard like that djembe player; that's some serious hirsute dedication. I didn't catch his name, but he runs a custom leather shop in the same building as the guitar store that hosted the Gathering. In addition to the djembe, he had a great portable percussion rig: he started with an old bass-drum harness from a marching band, then mounted a washboard and lots of hand percussion toys on the front of it. His wife played 12-string guitar.

Anyhow ... my National Triolian has an onboard piezo, and so did Spider Murphy's Regal. Some of the tenors Paul brought may also have onboard piezos, and his 5-string mando has a floating humbucker. But nobody brought a tenor with a magnetic pickup. I thought about bringing my National Silvo for show and tell, but the car was already pretty full of camping gear.

Behind that Beard is Jim Dwyer ..
It was good to sit in on a few tunes on Saturday ,

If the 2nd one is Organized It will not be on the same weekend as the 25th anniversary Of making the 'Goonies' movie in the county.
and all those cult movie fan folks filling up the lodgings. and making the Moving Trolley Jam Impossible ..

There was also a ham radio operators' convention over in Seaside, for people who still haven't figured out how to use the Internet.

2007 force 10+ gales blew down power-lines, felled by the trees going down.. and the web goes out with no juice ..
even 911 went out. Hams with generators come in handy then...

there were 'lets eat it now cause it's not frozen no more' big dinners that week in December.

Martin, the fellow wearing the flannel shirt ( 3rd to your left ) is playing a tenor built by Steve Parks! Great to see it. Steve was a great friend and great builder.

Yep, it has a Novax fret system too! Very unusual guitar.

Sounds like you all had a great time! If the next one does not conflict with Zoukfest I'll plan to be there.
