In the thread on wives and mandolin, several folks posted that they practice in the bathroom. When I was studying classical guitar seriously I realised that a spot that is super resonant and boosts your volume is actually the worst place to practice. Find the driest, least forgiving spot in the house. It will be less satisfying to your ears at first, but nothing will improve your sound and volume more. If you learn to sound good in a bad spot, your will find how to get the most out of your instrument. University music practice rooms are small, soundproofed and merciless! It works. Just my $.02.

I practice outside in the morning at sunrise whenever I get a chance.

Yeah, there's been a thread before on animal reactions to mandolin and I must say that animals are the most honest critics.

My problem is more when than where, i find so little time. So I take my mando along to the park and play while my kids are running around with their friends, and I play while they have their horse lessons and get some feedback from the neigh-bors.

Though I generally practice in my studio (no one but the spiders to offer criticism), in the fall it's not at all unusual to see me running through scales and arpeggios in front of the telly when a good football game is on.
