I'm looking for some new (to me anyway) Bluegrass to listen to. The mandolin must feature prominently. Stuff I like, listen to a lot, and already have most of are, Bill Monroe, Sam Bush (although I don't have any Newgrass Revival), Del McCoury Band, and Ricky Skaggs. As far as newer stuff and jamband type music I like the Stringdusters, Railroad Earth, Yonder Mountain String Band, and some Leftover Salmon. I actually prefer the more traditional vocal style to the Yonder, RRE, LoS, stuff. Del McCoury has about the ideal Bluegrass voice as far as I'm concerned.

So...any suggestions for new/old stuff I might like? I'm looking to broaden my horizons a little.

Thanks.

For new(er) stuff, check out the Café MP3 page (MP3 Link at the top of this page). You can listen by genre.

You mention Sam Bush...do you have his new recording called "Circles Around Me"? It features the mandolin (big surprise, eh?) and it's about the most bluegrassy thing he has done in quite some time.

5 Stars!

Here's a fun little video clip I found...

The Bluegrass Mandolin Extravaganza is an excellent set with a bunch of great players. Anything by Herschel Sizemore and the old album by Doyle Lawson, Tennessee Dream, is also great. Have fun.

Yup, I've about worn that one out I've listened to it so much. I was a little surprised it didn't generate more chatter here on the Cafe, but maybe I missed it.

I've been meaning to pick up that Bluegrass Mandolin Extravaganza for a long time. Thanks for reminding me. I've been a little late getting on the Herschel Sizemore wagon, but I recently picked up his instructional DVD and would like to find some of his recorded stuff. His style is just soooo smooth and clean.

Thanks. I'm at work right now and watching youtube is a big no no here, but I'll definitely check it out.

Yeah, Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver have some great offerings. Dig a Little Deeper still gets a fair amount of play time in my rotation...good mandolin, great singin', and the kick-off to Heartbreak Number 9 sucks me right in every time.

I've heard a couple tunes off Dan Tyminski's (sp?) latest CD that were pretty darn good. Enjoy Rhonda Vincent and the rage as well.

For the record, watching the SB clip above makes me feel a little better. That was awesome pickin', but it's nice to know he gets a little buzz here and there, too :) By the time the albums come out, all that reality is cleaned up...

Older Seldom Scene with the amazing voice, mandolin pickin' and antics of John Duffy. Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver. Jim and Jesse is a must! enjoy!

In the jamgrass/newgrass arena I really dig Greensky Bluegrass these days. Their mando picker, Paul Hoffman, really makes that Newson sing.

Go to Herschel Sizemore's site and buy his three CDs. IMHO every bluegrass mandolin player should have them.

Lately I've been really enjoying the David Grisman Bluegrass Experience recordings. What a band!

Check out some John Hartford. In my opinion he represents the bridge between more traditional BG to the newgrass stuff. Any of his later albums with Mike Compton are a great start.

While surfing around checking out some of the recommendations, I came across The Earl Brothers. I've heard of this band before and have listened to some samples. I'm intrigued by these guys, and was wondering what others think of them.
