Maple? mahogany? The name on the mandolin is 'Stadium'

"Stadium" has been known as one of the Strad-O-Lin variants. I'm guessin' mahogany plywood. Is that the one shown here (http://www.thinmanmusic.com/mandobacks.jpg) at Thin Man Music?

Very similar, I think. I can't tell without seeing the front. So then the grain is a paint job? I wonder what it's worth.

Looks like a match, Chuck, though I know nothing about veneer. I guess that would mean it is not a solid wood?

You should see ends of grain if its carved.

I had a Gibson A40, 3 ply mahogany back, It is a fine instrument.

I have a Stadium, which looks to have mahogany plywood on the back. Very nice, wide-grained solid softwood top.

Strad-O-Lins, as inexpensive instruments, were usually plywood, although some Cafe-ers have found ones with solid tops. If it's in good shape it could go for $300, possibly. Here's a link (http://www.thinmanmusic.com/mandos.jpg) to a front pic of the Stadium at Thin Man Music. He wants $350 for his. The Strad-O-Lin social group (http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/group.php?groupid=53) on the Cafe is probably the best source for information on S-O-L's and related models.

These were a tightly veneered laminate of very high quality as laminates go (not exactly "plywood" construction). Yes, the veneer is mahogany.
