I bought a book teach yourself to play mandolin by dan fox. I didn't know it was going to be all in music notation, so im trying to get a grasp on how to read the notes. The notes themselves I can get just by studying. I want to know if there is a cd or dvd giving examples as far as playing the half notes and quarter notes to the 4 count. So I know if im doing it right. I went out and bought a matronome. I just would like to hear the examples of the notes.

If you google the terms music notation, or music standard notation, you should be able to find some good websites that should have just what you are looking for~

Is there any dvd's that cover music notation and how to play to the Metronome with the mandolin?

John McGann, one of our more illustrious members, has a DVD out called Rhythm Tune Up. It's actually out of print, but there may be copies to be had from Elderly or Mel Bay according to John's website. Sounds like it's just what you're looking for. Doesn't address notation, but is all about working with a metronome and feeling the pulse.

It’s not a DVD, but the Bickford Mandolin Method explains this well and is available online: http://ia341013.us.archive.org/1/items/bickfordmandolin01bick/bickfordmandolin01bick.pdf

See page 9 for note values; page 17 has an explanation of counting rhythm; pages 18 through 24 have exercises to help you integrate these concepts. The “Exercise for Locating Notes” on page 24 will teach you to read notation for the first 7 frets of each string course.

The language is old fashioned but clear.

Working out notes of different time value in the same bar/phrase takes a little time to get the head around. It helps to start with something with notes of equal time value that you know and just do a little each day. Understanding dotted note value will come with a little practice, you'll be knocking out all those tricky 2/4 marches in no time.

My girlfriend teaches fiddle and with the kids she teaches time value with fruit shapes instead of crotchet quaver etc.. and gets them to clap out the rhythm. By the end of a lesson she's got them composing tunes.

Try clapping out the time over equal time values and move on to dotted time, cheaper than a DVD to get the idea and with a little perseverance you should start to hear the rhythm of the piece, then try playing it.

You could also check out Joe Carr's mandonotes group on yahoo for instructional materials. I have to check back in on that, myself, as I'm about to start playing with a group of folks whose music is mostly standard notation.
