i haven't posted here in a while, but i'm so excited about this new instrument i decided to share it.

this is a 4 string synth mandolin, neck thru body construction, mahogany body, quilted maple top, 1 DiMarzio stacked pro track humbucker, RMC divided saddle synth piezo pickup, will be stained dark blue, a tribute to the Bob Weir Blackknife Modulus guitar.

Matt Artinger is the luthier. This is after only 4 days of work!

You know how to pick em! Matt Artinger is building some of the best guitars this planet has ever seen. And a nod to Bobby to top it off. You're my kind of guy!

lol - thanks. well the rest of the story is that i was searching the internet for luthiers and somehow stumbled on matt's site. i noticed he built an acoustic electric that kind of reminded me of the blackknife, so i emailed and asked if he could build a replica solid body mandolin. he replied yes, and that he has actually played bobby's guitar while working with steve kimock on ratdog tour in 2008. so i immediately said "you're my guy!"

his wood working skills and finishes are amazing - i posted some guitar pix from his gallery below ...

this mandolin will be my second Bob Weir tribute - here's my Yanuziello "Cowboy Fancy" 8 string.

I've been thoroughly impressed with everything Matt has done. He has a true gift. I didn't know he worked with Kimock. That makes him even cooler. In my book, Matt Artinger takes the definition of "form and function" to a whole new level. Please post pics of your new mando when it's done. I can't wait to see the final product.

what are the three holes along the upper rim for?

what are the three holes along the upper rim for?

The RMC divided saddle synth pickup has 3 EQ knobs - we decided to mount them on the top to avoid cluttering the top more. Matt had the great idea of recessing them from the surface.

I formatted the controls to mimic my Steve Ryder EM-54 synth. See sketch below.

Matt is getting ready to stain/ spray/ finish this one next! (The crazy looking alligator case in the background isn't mine :)
