Where do I find a 1.5mm large rounded triangle pick that can be shipped to Canada? I ordered some heavy D'andrea ones from musicians friend but they were only 1mm. Need to try some or my Eastman 515 is gone.
I need a fatter sound like a Dawg but louder. The eastman is very much on the treble side.

Most US online retailers will ship to Canada but there is the Stringman in London, Ontario that will ship within Canada. They have Dawgs, Golden Gates and Wegans. They're happy to answer your questions in person if you give them a call. NFI, just a happy customer.

It is so cool to have members from all over.

What strings are you using? Has your bridge been adjusted? I get a fairly balanced sound out of my Eastman with J74s and a Dawg/ Proplec pick.

The D'Andrea Pro Plec also comes in a 1.5mm, I believe. Available from Jazzmando.

I have not doubt that http://www.12fret.com/ in Toronto could equally well provide any type of picks needed.

bluegrassdan,
Were they D'Andrea Pro-plecs that you had ordered? I thought that they only came in 1.5mm? I really like them but want one in 1mm and they seem to only be available in the Extra Heavy 1.5mm size.

Cheers,
Jill

Maybe a trade in the winds.
I have an Eastman 805. Pretty darn good balanced tone and good volume. Is your bridge fitting nicely all along the top?

The Bluegrass Connection in Iroquois, Ontario might also be of assistance.

I was at the 12th Fret last summer and, oddly enough, they had no rounded mandolin style picks. Lots of nice mandolins, though.

By the way, I've got an eastman 515 as well. Not sure if your hoping to achieving more volume or more bass, but sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

For darker tone I round the edges of a Wegen TF 150. The Pro-Plec is a good pick but in my opinion is brighter than a Dawg of Golden Gate.

Bluegrassdan,
Why don't you go to
http://www.wegenpicks.com/
The M150 is probably exactly what you are looking for. It works great on my Eastman. I also have the M100 and the difference is huge.
You can send Mr. Wegen PayPal and he will send you an envelope with the picks.

And for the same price you can specify a "special order" (M160, 170, etc.).

Try JazzMando picks. They're 1.5 and triangular; rounded edges. Best pick I've ever used to get the sound you're looking for. Go to JazzMando.com

Agree that you could check into Jazzmando's 1.5 mm D'Andreas. I've actually used mine less of late in favor of Wegen 140s b/c I wanted a brighter sound with a lighter touch than I get with the 1.5.

I really used the D'Andrea for everything until I got the Wegens...now I'm hooked on those things and may be trying out the 150s with a gift certificate purchase soon. I feel like I have to dig in with the Proplec to get the volume I want, but the darker tone is definitely there!

I recently tried the "Large Lite Rounded Guitar and Mandolin Pick" from V-Picks (1.5mm) and found they are definitely louder than the Golden Gate Dawg picks and have a relatively fat sound (http://www.v-picks.com/picks/18). According to their website, V-Picks ship to Canada. Like you, I prefer a richer, less trebly sound. I don't get good volume from the Golden Gates but have found that the Jim Dunlop Jazztone 207 picks give a nice fat sound with either the rounded (back) or pointed (really a rounded point) and they are a bit louder. They are only 45 cents at Greg Boyd's House of Fine Instruments and he has a good selection of picks in general (http://gregboyd.com/accessories.html?category_key=8&family=Mandolins). He also ships to Canada.

Good Luck!

If you want the D’Andrea Pro Plec (large with rounded corners) in 1.5mm, it is Pro-Plec # 346. I just got a bag of 24 of them from Elderly -- http://elderly.com/accessories/items/PRO346.htm

Read on for a tale of disappearing picks.

I had bought one of these Pro Plecs to try out. It’s become my mandolin pick of the moment. I thought I should get a few more in case I lost it, or dropped it in the middle of a jam or performance. So I stopped at Rudy’s Music on 48th Street in New York, which is the only store I know around here that has them, and bought three of them. At home that night, I took out my mandolin (Kentucky 150, which I got to learn on), took my original Pro Plec out of the strings, and began to announce proudly to my wife that I had bought a few more picks just in case I dropped this one. No sooner had I said that than the pick went flying out of my hand and vanished.

I looked under the chair, under the couch, under the cushions, in all the crannies of the upholstery, in the case, under the case, under the newspapers, under the books, under the sheet music, and all around, but I couldn’t find it. It totally disappeared.

So I went to dig out the three I had acquired earlier that day. One was in the bowl on the shelf near the door, where I emptied my pockets when I got home. Another pick was in the pocket of the pants hanging in the closet. That comes to two picks. Hmmm, strange, the third pick disappeared too, somewhere between the store and home. (I won’t even think about looking in the mess at the bottom of the closet.) All this prompted me to immediately get on the net and order some more picks. Now I am prepared!
