Just watched the 1965 movie Second Fiddle To A Steel Guitar (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000M9BS50?ie=UTF8&tag=mandcafe-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000M9BS50) referenced in the Paul Glasse Interview (http://www.mandolincafe.com/news/publish/mandolins_001158.shtml). Pretty cool video, very 60s.

All the big country names of the time were in there along with some really, really bad comedy. Monroe did Mule Skinner Blues and Blue Moon of Kentucky. Don't believe any of the music was actually done live because it was just too perfect and sounded right out of the studio, plus, the fingers and words coming out of the mouth weren't matching the tunes even close. Took a phone camera shot and wondered if someone can name all the guys in the band. The banjo player was left-handed and the guitar player was playing with a thumb pick. Very cool! The broken headstock and scratched out Gibson logo clearly visible.

Couldn't resist posting a shot of Homer & Jethro. They also made an appearance and did Camp Kookamunga which I believe I've seen online before and one other tune I didn't catch because the phone rang.

Don Lineberger-banjo
James Monroe-bass

Gene Lowinger played fiddle during this period, but the fiddler looks older.
Maybe Billy Baker?

Guitar player?

Lineberger played with Monroe around 1965, the Peter Rowan era, but the guitarist sure ain't Rowan. Another name from around that time is Jimmy Eldrod, but I can't find a pic of him. He played guitar and banjo with a bunch of bands: Wilma Lee & Stoney Cooper, Bailey Brothers, etc.

Later: My son Dave did a Google Books search, and confirmed that it's Jimmy Elrod on guitar. Reference is the Rosenberg & Wolfe book The Music of Bill Monroe, p. 154. Buddy Spicher fiddled on the recorded sound track, but the books states Bennie Williams did the fiddling on the film, and had trouble synching to "Spicher's unusual fiddle parts." Here's (http://books.google.com/books?id=PmiFb1e1Fm4C&lpg=PT181&ots=dxcIwdzShj&dq=%22bill%20monroe%22%20%22second%20fiddle%20to%2 0a%20steel%20guitar%22&pg=PT182#v=onepage&q=%22bill%20monroe%22%20%22second%20fiddle%20to%20 a%20steel%20guitar%22&f=false) a Google Books link to the relevant pages.
