Some men walk through their garage and see old crutches and pool noodles.
I saw the Mandolin Noodle Crutch. Behold!

Looks similar to what we used in medical school for circumcision!

ROTFL! Scott, how can I keep from posting smart a**ed comments when you use medical students and circumcision in the same sentence!

:))two words: Tone Guard
:))
if that won't guard the tone from getting out, nothing will.

I feel sorry for the mandolin.

Is this the darker side of mando-porn?

The mandolin will not fit in my case with the noodle crutch on.

Here I was thinking this would be a thread about "improvising" on a melody when it turns into a device made by the Spanish Inquisistion... "Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!" :)

It's kinda cool, but what does it do??

It's obviously a neck stretcher. Kinda works the opposite of a capo.

Do you see the wealth of knowledge found here on the cafe? I never would have known that mandolins need traction if not for this thread.

Here, I was thinking of an emotional crutch of "noodling" while improvising...

But this is genius, mcelli...DaVincian, even: permitting one to keep their chops up even whilst hobbling infirm. Now, can you do something with a mando and old poodles?

Might be a good way to pad a violin stand I guess.

That used for Enhanced Interrogation of your mandolin?, perhaps a Re-Education Program..
to make It change It's Tone?

Everthing's protected to nth degree except for the thing that seems to break the most often: the headstock!

But seriously, what is it for? Does it hold the instrument for repairs or re-stringing?

catmandu2
Dec-22-2009, 12:02pm
It appears that it holds it still so that it can be tuned more easily. Right? (I can tell by the rotary stand, enabling the unit to be turned as needed)

Looks like something my wife could use to stop me from playing so much. Hope she doesn't get one for Christmas.

I got it! FLOTATION!! The metal legs are to help ward off river hazards. On the next float trip down the Sacramento River, just tie up the mando to your inner-tube full of PBR and ya have a sure-fire babe-catcher: music + alcohol! Brilliant!

Catmandu2 has is right. Whenever I change strings or do anything to the mandolin, I always wish I had 4 hands. I am laughing out loud with some of the responses this posting has gotten.

When I change strings, I approach the mandolin and say, "Say ahhhh."

When I'm done, I do a little jig and scream, "It's alive! Alive!!!"

Er...I was being facetious . I actually thought it was sculpture..

But I guess that's better than chasing your mando across the room while changing strings. (maybe, forget about my request for a mando/old poodle apparatus...I was thinking...performance art)

I just didn't happen to have any old poodles in the garage when the idea of the noodle crutch hit. Otherwise it would have a tail and a yipping soundtrack. Maybe even a rhinestone collar instead of the velcro.

Maybe it turns a 12 fret (at the body) mandolin into a 14 freter.

Maybe you can incorporate this noodle guard into your design somehow? ;)

catmandu2
Dec-23-2009, 2:03pm
Seriously? (I mean, the noodle guard...not incorporating the design, which is a no-brainer)

mando_dan
Dec-24-2009, 11:09am
Does it convert mandolins into noodles? We can't digest cellulose or metal, and the nitro finishes might be bad for you, so the idea's a bit kooky, but who here wouldn't want to TASTE a Loar?

D@mn! Once I finished the mandolin noodle crutch I was going to embark on designing a noodle guard, but apparently someone beat me to it. Curses!!!
