I didn't want to rehash something I'm sure is so simple but tried searching for mandola and om and came up blank. I hope some one will let me know what the difference is and the tuning thanks. John http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

It depends. Scroll down to The common sizes of mandolin (http://www.mandolincafe.com/archives/faq.html)

The difference depends on what countr you are in, is the US a Mandola is tuned like a Viola (a 4th lower than mando) but in Europe an OM and a Mandola are the same thing. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

A mandola is tuned CC GG DD AA (same octave as a mandolin)and has generally a smaller body and scale length than an Octave Mandolin (aka Irish Bouzouki) which is tuned GG DD AA EE, but an octave lower than the mandolin http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

I meant to say 5th didn't realize that. OM has a shorter scale than Bouzouki they can not be used interchangaly Bouzouki is generaly abou 24-26ins OM has anywhere from 19-23ins. Bouzouki is not only an Irish instrument it was invented in Greece and adapted in ITM (Irish Traditional Music for all you non Sessioners). http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

This is wrong information - #there is difference between OM and mandola - look here. (http://www.musikalia.it/en/catalogue/instruments_list.asp?cat=3) You will find standard italian mandola, that has diapason cca. 43,5cm and octave mandola, that has diapason cca 53,0cm and the lower strings (C,G) are in octaves.
