It depends on how you define a classical mandolin.

If you are talking about bowlbacks then you need to distinguish between vintage and contemporary. If you have other types in mind, please .... more details.

You can play classical on any mandolin but some might work better than others, depending on what you intend to play etc.

Thanks for the scoop, I really like that Pandini looking mando. Yet, the one I saw had only 4 strings...anyhow, I was looking in an old Mandolin World News and saw an article on Hugo D'Alton, (Summer 78'") and really liked his mando's. Now I have yet to read that article, so I know there are more questions to come...later, and fill me in on that Pandini style, thanks, dy.

I got it thru Carlo Aonzo who brings over one or two of Sr. Pandini's instruments when he comes to the US. Luckily i had right on first refusal on this one.

Hugo D'Alton mainly played Embergher, one of the finest Roman mandolin brands and one that justifiably commands pretty high prices for the high-end, soloist-grade stuff. Roman mandolins have pronounced "V" necks, a radiused fingerboard, and an extremely narrow nut width. I believe D'Alton also played a 6-string Lombard mandolin on occasion. I don't know who made his Lombard instrument (Monzino is fairly common and fairly well respected); these are pretty obscure nowadays anyhow.

Ali Stephens, a student of Hugo d'Alton, and an occasional poster here, plays an exquisite Embergher. You can really get a sense of the range and the tone she gets on it on Con Espressione, her newest CD. Highly recommended (by me and prob a few others).

You may also try the mandolin/guitar album of "Music from the Novels of Louis de Bernieres" that she recorded a while ago. It has the same cover picture as the paperback of Captain Corelli's Mandolin and can be found fairly widely in bargain bins (underservedly, I might add): the marketing tie-in with the book and film means that many more copies of this CD were made and more widely distributed than one would normally expect for an album of classical mandolin music.

...As a matter of fact, the Music from the Novels of Louis de Bernieres was the fastest selling release for Chandos Records, a quite prestigious classical label! #Not bad for our diminutive friend the mandolin, eh? #I am very excited to be bringing Ali and Craig Ogden to Columbus, OH in April 2005. #Anybody remotely proximal, please come on by. #I'm certain I'll post word here when the time draws closer.

I ordered Con Espressione directly from Astute. #They shipped and it arrived very promptly. #Ali's recording of the old classical standards (i.e. the chamber works/songs by Beethoven, Hummel, and Mozart) is one of my favorite modern-instrument recordings of that stuff. #For some reason, she doesn't have that venerable old CD, Music for Mandolins, listed at her site.

I notice that Mid Missouri now offers a 13" scale. Since they also have a round sound hole could you consider these "new classicals". There is one for sale in the classifieds. Mid Mo calls it a violin scale. I almost bought it but am focusing more on guitar right now.
