It seems most mando backs are curly maple but what effect would walnut or rosewood have on tone as compared to maple?

Makes it a little different, of course, Weber will make you a Mahogany back and sides one to find out yourself. others have said "warmer"
I had a Gibson A40 a long time ago, it was spruce topped, Mahogany, neck, sides, and a pressed laminated mahogany back..
It was a nice mandolin. still is.. in someones hands , now.

Redwood has been used instead of spruce for the top.. some pictures are bound to be in that section, back there somewhere..

I have a Black Walnut/Spruce Mandola, but I don't have 2 , the second one made out of other woods
{to try to make up some analogy and metaphors to substitute, poorly, for hearing the sound in person.}
