Year is '83. The 2 in M2 is a level 2 model - there are 3 levels, with 3 being the most ornate/bound. The M is maple.

Could anyone tell me the proper gauge of strings to use on this mandolin the m2, do you think medium gauge would hurt this mandolin? Thanx steve

These mandolins are designed for light-gauge strings. There's actually a sticker on the heel block that specifies the string gauges. GHS A-250s are a perfect match and exactly what I use on my pancake, which I love!

You've got a great mandolin. I have an '87 Flatiron model 1N that I also love.
