I am looking to get a playable F. (I am an F snob, and a slave to that beautiful thing unfortunately) I want something with bark and bell tone up the neck, must have volume and tone. My tops right now is the Collings MF, but it is on the high end of my price range and I fear you are paying a little for the branding. I have seen some nice czechs- specifically Krishots, but so many nice looking, but junkie sounding things in my price range. Does anybody have any great suggestions?

You know, I played a Gibson F9 that I really liked. The guy at First Quality Music was ready to deal the price down to around $2500. Boy, I liked that one a lot.

I'm also really fond of the Web Gallatin. At around $2300 they're a really nice F style instrument.

But you should probably just go out and play a heck of a lot of them until you find the best instrument for YOU. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

The Tope at Elderly. Call them and ask a mandolin player to compare it to other more expensive mandolins.

There was last week on ebay a Weber Fern for $3600 buy it now that went unsold. Point is, I think there are good deals to be found in a used mando for that price.

I got a 2003 Gibson F5-G and a Calton deluxe case for $2800. It has a great chop and is very loud. The tone is not as bright as some other mandos such as the Collings MF5, but I prefer a more mellow tone anyway.

Buffalo Brothers in Carlsbad,Ca. has a Sumi F for sale. Kind of an ugly duckling with a beautiful voice. I own this one and played it briefly after I fell in love with the tone: even, loud with a great chop. Alas, these geezer hands couldn't adjust to the Collings style slim V neck. It's on consignment, and if a Cafe Member buys it I'll donate 10% of my take to the PSF.
