don't know if folks have seen this beauty from Michigan builder Paul Newson:

Not sure what it sounds like, but amazing looking A-5. Love the rosette and inlay in the headstock. Anyone who lives near Gryphon played this one??

I'm a bit confused by the statement "list price $2150 - our price $2750"!!! A typo, one hopes!
Nice looking mandolin.

Cheers,
Jill

Beautiful, but why would anyone (builder or store) call it an A-5? Maybe that's also a typo.

that's a good point....should be a A-4 or a A-2 for an oval.

Jonathan, getting MAS? How's your Newson A5 coming along? Must be more than a year now. :)

Not really getting MAS for an oval, although the thought of having a "set" of Newson's is attractive (F5, A5, A4). My Newson A-5 is amazing. Really opening up and for less than $2500, one would be hard-pressed to find a better sounding, better built varnish A5! here's a few pics:

I just ordered the "shopworn" Newson F5 from Gryphon. Really looking forward to this one! I talked with Paul Newson on the phone yesterday and he seems like a great guy and a very knowledgeable builder.

I picked up an A5 from Paul in February- ordered it at the Wheatland festival the prior fall. I really like it- he does great work. Mine really cuts through in a jam session, and is just stunning.

x2. I've been to Paul's shop and had him repair one of my mandos. He is a great guy, very humble, helpful, and conscientious. I'm impressed with his luthiery (is that a word?).

FWIW, The Collings in question, in OP, Is a hybrid, the long neck of a 12 fret , but an Oval sound hole in the Body ,
not really an A4 as they are 10 fret to the body, or a F hole A5.. but the dealer missed that ,
Or just simplified using common jargon, ..
and so, then, understandably,.. the OP passed that label along .
