Thanks for the great photos! Both of these look in excellent condition, and both of them are pretty high up in the model range of these makers, meaning they would have been really quite expensive mandolins when they were new, not massmarket models.

Further to my comments in your other thread (link (http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=55677)), I can now confirm that this is indeed a "proper" Vinaccia, not from one of the "allievi di..." shops. This is the label of the original family workshop, Fratelli Vinaccia.

Commercial valuations for all vintage instruments are somewhat theoretical until you find somebody willing to pay them, and the market for vintage bowlbacks is so small that this somewhat vague. However, I would say that these two should be worth at least $2000 each, and in particular the Vinaccia may well go for well above that depending on the vagaries of the market.

Lovely instruments both.
I'm unable to read a date on the Calace. If you could provide?
Thanks.

Never mind - I see you posted a date on another thread.

I just inherited them from my wife's grandmother, since in the family I'm the only one that plays them. I actually play mostly guitar. she ordered and bought the Calace in the fifties, directly from the Calace's store in Naples. I'm not sure when and where she got the Vinaccia. she use to play them in a small orchestra with mandolins section. this was long time ago and as far as I know she didn't actually play them a lot. for sure she handled them with a very good care. the Vinaccia has some minor cracks in the fretboard. the Calace is in excellent condition.

I'm not an expert of mandolin sound, what I can tell so far is that the Vinaccia is louder and has a higher string action. the Calace has a very sweet and warmer sound and better playability...
