September's Tune

Looks like it will be neck and neck between Whiskey Before Breakfast and East Tennessee Blues.

I'm pulling for East Tennessee Blues as it's a great tune and one many of us haven't learned yet.

I hate say it but WBB is kind of worn out for me. Especially as a tune for my local jam.

I hope Whiskey before breakfast will win the poll. Actually I didn't know that East Tennessee blues was so close.
WBB seems to be very popular among Swedish bluegrass bands so I guess it would be good to learn it. I'm very fond of East Tennessee blues too though. I've played it some and would be glad to learn it properly.

IIIrd Tyme Out has a great recording on "Back to the MAC" (a live CD). You can also find some versions at Mandozine in TEF format. Most are quite advanced but I actually managed to learn the tune, don't remember if it was any of those versions or another one.
I don't think it's a very beginner-friendly tune though. But I'd like to know how many pure beginners there are among us now, since all the new recordings are quite fancy with ornamentations and stuff.

In an underhanded effort to sway the vote I ripped an MP3 of a live recording of Monroe and Doc Watson doing ETB which I got from bluegrassbox.com.

I was about to post it on the Yahoo group site and noticed that I could be permanently removed from the group for uploading something I didn't create.

Is there somewhere else I should put it for the group to access?

This from the terms of use at bluegrassbox:
"All of the material available for download (including the streaming broadcasts) are of bands that allow the recording and free distribution of their live performances."

I would think it is acceptable for you to post this piece of music as it is, as long as you provide both copyright acknowledgments and a link to where the original file is.

In doubt, drop #a line to the bluegrassbox admin.

It's definitely not a beginner version, as you might imagine, but might as well go to the source to learn it.

Hi picksnbits, exactly where on the bluegrassbox site did you find that Watson/Monroe ETB? I am all new to the site, and can´t really seem to find my way around.
I am signed up, both for bluegrassbox and etree.

I have a feeling I´m missing all the fun there.

From the main page click on one of the links under Downloads on the left.

The "All Txt Files" link takes you to an alphabetical list of .txt files, each of which describes an available show.

The "Browse" link lets you browse the available files in a directory structure. The one with Bill and Doc is in http://www.bluegrassbox.com/bgb-con....21.shnf (http://www.bluegrassbox.com/bgb-contents/bluegrass/doc+bill1969-06-21.shnf/)

You have to ftp in to actually download files and they are pretty big, around 8-14 meg per track.
