Hey my friend showed me a little custom coin pouch he uses to carry picks in his pocket. Nice selection he has. Blue Chip, Red Bear, the illegal ones and few others.

I think I would like to try using one.

Does anyone use a coin pouch or something they carry in their pocket to hold picks? I have seen several people use those old oval rubber coin holder that you squeeze to open but I haven't seen any of those for sale in years.

If anyone has any links to ones for sale would be cool too.
I looked on eBay but I really didn't find anything I like.

Let's see those pick purses! :mandosmiley:

How fortuitous, I have a mandolin arriving from the Mandolin Store on Thursday. Will see if the pouch with mando practice still holds true.

I got the Jazzmando key ring holder in leather. I have a small wooden box that has a slide top that works great too. Altoids tins (Cindy) are cool as well. Then when you walk you sound like maracas!

I've used a coin wallet to carry my loose change in ever since the UK has had £1 ( $1.60 US) coins,so easy to loose a lot of cash if you ever get a hole in the pocket. I carry a half dozen different picks in the separate compartment,

I have had a small leather "coin purse" (little snap-closure pouch) that I've carried picks in for the past decade or so. Right now it contains:
Three sets of thumb-and-finger picks -- one "clown barf" and two ivory-colored thumbpicks, six Dunlop fingerpicks ranging from .018 to .025, plus one extra Dunlop (don't know why)
One plastic fingerpick for use on pre-1900 Autoharps
Three orange Tortex small triangle picks (for mandolin)
One Dunlop Ultex .73 small triangle pick (also for mandolin)
Four gigundous white triangular picks (Fender or otherwise) for guitar
Two nondescript Fender medium small triangular picks, purpose unknown
One 1979 Susan B. Anthony dollar coin (did you know she's from Rochester?)
Two 2000 Sacajawea dollar coins
One 1993 Canadian "loonie" dollar coin
Three safety pins.

There should be a huge triangular Appalachian dulcimer pick in there too, but it's missing. Have to check my pants pockets.

Apart from my coins, the contents of mine are - 2 x Wegen Bluegrass picks.
2 x Weber picks with different 'points'.
1 x genuine tortoise shell pick (from a vintage
picture frame).
1 X Dunlop triangular Guitar pick.
1 x Gibson small 'teardrop' shaped pick.
2 x small 'allen' keys of different sizes.
& a lot of pocket fluff.

I love these threads!

I use the jumbo model of these fine lucky pouches from Australia. Lucky for everyone but the kangaroo that donated it. They are a great way to end a conversation. Just hand it to someone and then tell them what it is.

You can get them here (http://cgi.ebay.com/JUMBO-Kangaroo-SCROTUM-hide-skin-leather-roo-scrote_W0QQitemZ250475053956QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_ DefaultDomain_0?hash=item3a517a0384&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14). NFI.

I keep my extra picks in a little silver satin pouch with drawstring that came from (believe it or not) a cigarette pack! Some brand called "Satin" (natch) being marketed to women in the 80s (?). I have no idea how I came by it ... :whistling: The ones I'm using are either left in the strings or my pocket, where they can wander off. That's living on the edge! ;)

Jim,

The plastic pick holders that are spring loaded and designed to stick to your instrument (and thus allow to very cooly throw your pick into the crowd in a show of great fanfare) actually work pretty well. I haven't actually stuck one to an instrument yet, but those fit in your pocket and are relatively compact. I haven't tried to get the sticky tape off yet, but just left the plastic tape cover on there. I think it'll hold up to 5 Heavy picks, though I'm not sure...have just been carrying in my pocket of late without the holder...

I know a guy who carries his in a Crown Royal velvet bag, but not in his pocket. I've also used a small bag with a drawstring that a local jeweler packages charms in...similar to the Kangaroo "pouch" above, but without the mojo ;)

Earlier time this came up there was one made from tanning the skin of one of the Millions
of [ foolishly imported to Australia] Cane Toads, that looks less like 'Kermit' than #15.

but the same idea, link was then to PI e-bay seller..

A while ago i put a bunch of spare picks in a clean Altoid tin. When i opened it some months later it had rusted on the inside and the picks were warped. Anyone else had that experience or can explain it?

I keep 2 heavy picks in the watch pocket of my jeans 24/7. For several years they were a Red Bear and TS. For over a year now I've carried a BlueChip and the TS. Never lost them and always have them handy. Once you get into the habit, it's just like carrying a wallet or knife.

Naw cwilson was showing me the other day what he carries his picks in. It is an expensive ($50 I think he said) custom made Italian coin purse for men that he keeps his picks in.

I want one but not quite so fancy! I am seriously thinking about the Kangaroo pouchs that Mike suggested! LOL!

I think the roo pouch is kind of cool and I assume the poor suckers weren't slaughtered just for the little (or maybe not so little?) sack that holds their jewels :disbelief:...I guess the skins are used for leather...is roo meat edible? I think I'll stick to my mini Dapper Dan Pomade tin.

I think roos are a pest problem in some parts of Oz. When I was over there last year I remember hearing about programs to slaughter them. The meat is edible, but I don't know if the meat from culling them is used. Hopefully Frankenstein, Graham McDonald or one of our other Ozzy regulars will fill in the details.

Edit to add this link (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/1834061.stm). 5.5 to 7 million a year! That's a lot of pick bags!

Kangaroos are good low fat, tasty and enviromentally friendly (in that their paws don't damage the soil). A nice Aus shiraz with md rare K on a bed of mashed sweet potato with a side of bok choi(chinese spinich). Sorry I a starting to ramble, but it does that. I imagine it is like deer, a good food readily available.

Aug-06-2009, 8:18am
You're making it sound very appetizing. Someone once told me that the meat from the older ones gets a little tough, so it's preferred to use the smaller ones. Hence the term, put a shrimp on the barbie. :)) Never had it, so can't vouch for the taste, but I have heard it puts a little spring in your step. ;)

Roo meat is quite similar to white tail deer (at least the VA and PA varieties I've eaten). In fact, I consider them a similar animal (problem) that those of us on the East Coast consider deer. They both get into the gardens and eat crops, both are tasty, both can do serious damage to an auto.

Craig is quite correct, with a nice Shiraz rare roo is wonderful. Low fat, not too gamey, good flavor, garlicky mashed potatoes are a nice accompaniment.

If I'm not mistaken, there are not roo farms and the wild culled roos are processed for meat for supermarkets, pet food, and restaurants. There are no large predators for them in Oz, other than cars, trucks, and farmers.

Photos are of a troop of Roos in a pasture late in the afternoon in the Hunter Valley NW of Sydney, OZ and then a group of tourists taking pictures of the same!

Mike Bunting asked;

Where do you get the Dapper Dan Pomade?

Mike, my daughter Jenny Lynn made that for me. She's a crafty little gal. She said she got the little tin and a Dapper Dan waterslide decal off of, where else, Ebay. :))

The tin is about 2" in diameter, holds enough mandolin and guitar picks for me, and fits nicely in my pocket. She spray painted the tin red and stuck the decal on it and it's kinda neat...thanks Jenny. ;)

I haven't figured out how to post a link...yet...but the thread with photos is entitled "An Unconventional Pick Holder" post #50.
