How do I attach a file to a post?

To attach a file to your post, you need to be using the main 'New Post' or 'New Thread' page and not 'Quick Reply'. To use the main 'New Post' page, click the 'Post Reply' button in the relevant thread.

On this page, below the message box, you will find a button labelled 'Manage Attachments'. Clicking this button will open a new window for uploading attachments. You can upload an attachment either from your computer or from another URL by using the appropriate box on this page. Alternatively you can click the Attachment Icon to open this page.

To upload a file from your computer, click the 'Browse' button and locate the file. To upload a file from another URL, enter the full URL for the file in the second box on this page. Once you have completed one of the boxes, click 'Upload'.

Once the upload is completed the file name will appear below the input boxes in this window. You can then close the window to return to the new post screen.

What files types can I use? How large can attachments be?

In the attachment window you will find a list of the allowed file types and their maximum sizes. Files that are larger than these sizes will be rejected. There may also be an overall quota limit to the number of attachments you can post to the board.

How do I add an image to a post?

If you have uploaded an image as an attachment, you can click the arrow next to the 'Attachment Icon' and select it from the list. This will be inserted into your post and can be located where you want it displayed.

To include an image that is not uploaded as an attachment and is located on another website, you can do so by copying the full URL to the image, (not the page on which the image is located), and either pressing the 'Insert Image' icon or by typing before the URL and after it, ensuring that you do not have any spaces before or after the URL of the image. You can insert pictures from your albums (?) in this way too.

Howdy mods,
I'm appending my question to this thread, but it's actually about the neck repair thread currently in Builders and Repair. The photos are embedded in the text with a photobucket album address. Does this mean that the photos disappear from MCafe if/when that album removes or expires(how long do those albums live these days?). I know in the not so distant past, I saved Cafe pages with photos(from photobucket or the like) that disappeared into... thin air, but I haven't noticed that phenomenon lately.

Thanks, benny

I am not a moderator benny, but in answer to your question, if you link to photos instead of uploading them to the Mandolin Cafe they will disappear if they are no longer on the site that had been hosting them.
This is why I almost always upload photos to the Mandolin Cafe.

There is no expiration on image albums hosted on this site--other sites I can't guarantee. As far as images disappearing, I'm assuming you mean from the old forum software because it no longer exists. However, the statement they've disappeared entirely isn't accurate because every post and image was moved to the new forum. They're just in a new location. It doesn't make any sense to keep two similar copies of a massive forum with hundreds of thousands of posts and images in existence. Keeping an old forum that's shut down isn't practical--there are significant costs involved in hosting this resource. The statement that linking to external images means they disappear from here if the other site goes away or changes their directory structures is true. If you want it permanently displayed, they need to be uploaded to the forum. We can't guarantee what will happen to externally hosted images so link at your own risk.

Thanks Bill and Scott,
OK, that's a confirmation then. So this thread (http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=51451) with jpg.s hosted on photobucket won't necessarily have images if searched for at some later date, if the photobucket album expires or is withdrawn.
The reason I ask is mostly I don't know(unless I check "Properties") whether an image in a thread is on MCafe or elsewhere on the internet, if it's embedded in the text of a post. If it's an attachment, I presume it to be in MCafe's memory banks. As you might guess, I often go searching later for "pictures I have seen" and rely on you to keep then handy for me :-)

For the last couple of days at least, when I post an embedded image from a website, all that shows is a placeholder. Any idea what's going on here?

Example:

Hmph, it worked! I squirrelized two pics and posted (http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=54808) them, and it didn't work. This Costco picture also didn't work in another thread.

Lee, check the squirrelizer site... Those photos aren't retained on their server longer than a few minutes. "Cached images will be deleted every half hour to free up disk space." - From the site.

Yup. Ya gotta "save as" and embed it the usual way.
