Chris Thile's interview with WDAV from the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC (http://www.spoletousa.org/2009.php)will air today on WDAV. You can listen live online (http://www.wdav.org/18_174_0.cfm). There are photos on the WDAV Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/s.php?q=wdav&init=q&sid=f940f589d6fee863ba3e2271c6e94dd0#/album.php?aid=78845&id=12074834460&ref=mf)from their set. Looks like Chris was playing the Loar there (for those who obsess over which instrument he's using at the moment). You can see a pick too!

Interesting interview, although only about 7 minutes including the prerecorded music. Chris pushes the boundries in whatever genre he's palying in at the time.

This gets me excited to see Chris and the Punch Brothers here in Western MA in July (as if I needed a reason to be excited!).

Thanks!

Larry

Bummer. I missed the interview during work related stuff. I wonder if it will be archived...

I went to the Punch Brother concert in Charleston last Thursday night - at the Cistern. I have only been playing mando a couple of years, but my general impression is that Chris is from another dimension. It was truly an amazing perfomance and they look like they were have a good time doing it (I was on the second row). They played at night in that good 'ol Charleston humidity so a fair amount of tuning was required between songs. My favorite comment from Chris was, "there never was an A string that went to heaven."
Cheers all

For the Punch Brothers enthusiasts (and the not so enthusiastic maybe) their set at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival this year is billed as "The Punch Brothers Sing and Play Bluegrass". Supposedly a whole set of traditional bluegrass. I recently emailed KOTO, the local public radio station down there, and the whole festival will be streamed live again as it was last year (provided they get permission from all the artists, but they managed it last year). Definitely worth a listen.

From that photo it looks like he might be using the brown pick.

Looks like he's using a Tone-Gard too. Does he always use one? I'd never noticed it before.

Yes. He's been using a Tone Guard the times I saw him recently (touring for How to Grow A Woman 2-3 years ago). Someone gave him a small teddy bear and he popped it into his hoody and made jokes about Tone Guard--- Tone Bear.
