I recently bought a mandolin on ebay. It was advertised as an Oscar Schmidt, but the label inside - partially torn - reads "Victrola" in the same font as the famous record players' The strings were new and had jarred the neck loose from the body - nothing broken, just came free from the clue. It is a flat-top. Clearly quite old, there's beautiful wear in the finish where the neck was held over the years. Here's my question, does anyone know of this brand and is it worth it for me to fix it? It was inexpensive, less than $100.

Sounds interesting. Can you post some pics?

I'm sure that it was built by one of the big builders for the same folks that sold the record players. Most of the music stores handled all types of music. Wurlitzer sold stringed instruments that they didn't build and I'm sure others did the same. If you post a picture we might be able to ID the builder from similar catalog pages.
