I was off doing other musics when Planxty went around the first time, and have recently begun to discover the 'back catalog' of their work.

So I ordered the DVD of the recent Vicar Street performance and it is just fantastic!!.

Enjoy,

I was given the DVD for my birthday when I was in the UK last month - unfortunately I live in the US and the region/PAL thing thing made it not worthwhile bring it back with me.
I'ts brilliant - a must buy for anyone interested in this type of music - and if you want to really see how the whole CBOM thing came into being - start with this - great music, often copied but in my view never equaled.
The sleeve notes say Donal Lunny's zouk and guitar are by Yairi (I think that's how it was spelt), Andy Irvine played various Sobells but his mandolin was a flat top with an incredibly wide neck - possibly a Foley - but someone else will identify it I'm sure.
For me the most interesting thing is watching Andy Irvine play - I've seen him close up at small folk clubs in the UK but forgot just how light his touch is - his fingers seem to float all over the fingerboard with almost no downward pressure at all.
Must buy the region 1/NTSC version....

Yes the DVD is great, definately worth getting !

Steph, the mandolin Andy plays is not a Foley it is actually a Davy Stuart long necked mandolin, he calls it an ANDYLIN (http://www.chinatogalway.com/Bouzouki%20style%20Andylin.htm)( FOR FUN )

He also plays a sobel bouzouki and his Sobell Guitar Shaped Bouzouki (http://www.chinatogalway.com/bouzouki%20style%20guitar%20shaped.htm)

Andy make it look so easy! Wonderful player

My copy of the Planxty DVD is currently on its way to me (I hope!).

Craig, I ordered it through Christy's website.

Steph, it's supposed to be Region 0, so it can be played anywhere, but you can't get over the NTSC/PAL thing. All our TVs here in Australia seem to be NTSC compatible these days so I can happily watch DVDs from the States and Japan as well as the UK and Europe http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

BTW, I picked up Christy's box set recently. Hard to know where to start!!

Cheers,

Simon

Yeah I saw your Big Fat grin but then I was only a few seats away from you!
And we won't mention your pathetic attempt to blag your way into the after concert VIP Party Area with the wrong coloured wrist band on. (Did I say that out aloud?)
Donal's Guitar and Zouk were both made by Yairi.
Donal and Christy's bodrhan's were also made by Davey Stuart from New Zealand - for what it's worth Christy's was a Christmas present from Donal!!
The CD is out now and the Craic is mighty as they say

I will jump in here to mention the Christy Moore DVD from RTE Uncovered (http://www.netsoc.ucd.ie/~justy/mooredvd.html), which I think is possibly the best use of DVD format for music I have seen, despite the rather carping review in the link.

He has many special guests, including Shane MacGowan and Sinead O'Connor, and Donal lunny, Decland Sinnott and Jimmy McCarthy play on most tracks.
The format is simple: they hired a house for a week or two, fixed it up with (judging by the results) stste of the art recording and video gear, then got the guests to come around one by one and have a relaxed and intimate session with Christy et al, then put it out as a TV series, then edited down (the source of the carping) to a superb DVD, with some extras such as the videos for "Don't Forget Your shovel".
The whole thing just works beautifully, and is the only music DVD we have that we keep returning to.

I'm interested to know why you say that? What is it about this DVD that makes it 'the best use' of the format? My own current favourite is the new Led Zepplin DVD (ducking). The sound on that one is criminally good, too!
