View Full Version : Post A Pic of You & Your Favorite Picker

Now that the "Post A Picture of Yourself" thread is starting to die down (and after only 100,000 views), I thought it was high time to start another that should be a cafe favorite..... introducing Post A Picture of Yourself With Your Favorite Picker.

Actually I just purchased a scanner and I scanned in a picture that has been in my guitar case for the past several years. This was backstage at Wintergrass several years ago when I got to meet the Guitar God himself, Tony Rice.

There's an interesting story that goes with this meeting. I and another younger kid were admiring Tony's guitar as it lay in it's blue Anvil case. Tony noticed us looking at it and he told the young man to "go ahead, play it!". Well you should have seen the look on this young man's face. He picked up the legendary guitar and picked a few tunes (pretty well I might add) and proceeded to get his mother to take a picture of Tony and him (holding the guitar). Man I wish I had a copy of that picture.

So let 'em rip.......

Scotti, I think the one of you at age 13 with Big Mon is the best. Classic photo. What year was that?

Here's a picture my wife took a copy of years ago while we were on vacation in the desert. The guy immediately to the right (my left) of me is an incredible clarinetist.

Albert love the photo.. As everybody knows.. Roland White is my hero.. He is one of my favorite people in the whole world. You will never find a nicer person with a bigger heart than Roland White and one of the most expressive musicians on the mando.. There is alot of history tied to Roland White also..

Okay, I'll be the blunt one to ask who the black mando player is? #Don't get me wrong, some of my greatest friends are black for you human rights activists. #I am just curious because me and my ex-fellow employee (a killer jazz keyboard player that is black) wanted to know because he was shocked to see a black guy playing mando. #I told him music is music and I also introduced him to the origin of the baPPO)))(^(*^Y8iohkjo!

Uh...I had to read that a couple of times.... Um, isn't it the case that November 2004 hasn't happened yet? Or did I somehow miss a year?

Great pics, though. I agree, the one with Evan and The Mon is a classic.

I would have posted a picture of me and Tim O'Brien taken last week at the Tønder Festival here in Denmark, but I just got my pictures developed today and the negative didn't expose properly. "#%/!"%"€#% one-time cameras!!!!http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif
Next time I'll just have to bring my real one and hope to keep it dry and in one piece.

Would like to say that I was amazed at how friendly Tim was. He had just flown in from Detroit earlier in the day (7-8 hour flight), had been in Denmark for 8 hours (i figure he had been going for over 24 hours at this point), and was still able to play a great set with Driesen, Powell and Doyle. Afterwards, he stood out by the CD stand and talked to fans (myself included). Although I don't have the photo, I do have some tips on right-hand picking technique that I'm working on.

Just wanted to post a few words on how cool he was. Made my festival #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

Kevin,
gladly, but I don't know how to describe it. I asked him how he keeps his wrist so loose, so he pulled a pick out of his pocket and showed me (wihtout mando). It has to do with a little bit of arm motion, lots of wrist movement, and then also moving just the thumb and forefinger (holding the pick) slightly independently of all the other motion. It was easier to understand when he showed it than it is to describe. He also said to not push the string out of the way using the pick, but to let the pick glide over the string instead.
does that make any sense?[I]
