I am a guitar player wanting to learn elementary mandolin, chords for rhythm mostly. #I have the opportunity to purchase a "J B Player" acoustic electric brand for a reasonably low price, but cannot find any feedback as to the quality. #I don't need nor can afford top of the line, but don't want a piece of trash either. #Anyone out there with experience on this brand?

They are not a major mandolin name and they are obviously made in the Pacific Rim. But they should be fine, especially as a beginner/electric. Later, when you upgrade (and you probably will, trust me) it will make a good beater. My recommendation is buy it from a place that has a 100% money back guarantee. When you get it, ask a good mandolin luthier to inspect it. If it is defective, send it back. If it is OK, invest $75 - $100 to have the luthier do a full set up on it and change the tuners if they are too cheaply made. It will then play and sound very decent for many years to come.
