Let me translate.

It's a Shell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unix_shell) game.

Unix humor.

Bash (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bash)
Korn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korn_shell)

Pardon my ignorance, but is there any mandolin content to this thread?

"Korn" reminds me of Hee-Haw. "Bash" might describe the way that I flail away at various instruments.

(Just kidding. I infer from the Web that Korn and Bash are alternative "Unix shells", but other than that, I'm clueless as to what you guys are talking about. I know about "hardshell" and "softshell" cases, but ...)

PS -- I see Mike beat me to it ... and actually provided links to explain what it's about.

Bourne or csh mostly here, but I don't generally get to choose as I work mostly on other people's systems. I'm actually using Korn on one server right now.

And vi, always. *throws hipster vi hand symbol*

Maybe we should invent mando/bin. Or /usr/bin/mandoln -s.

I'll see your Novell discs and raise you the full set of VMS manuals for a VAX 11/750 that fills my office bookcase!

My gosh....how did it come to be that there are so many actual geeks in one place all gathered around mandolins?

you can keep your Novell discs and your VMS manuals....however, I know where we can get our hands on half a dozen Sun Rays and some Ultras. ;)

I loved those things. Go to anyone's workstation put your card in their Sun Ray and up pops your desktop:cool:

It's been like nine years since I did anything with Unix. Must have something to do with all OUR customers (I work for a software company) primarily being users of the 'other' O.S.
(I did get to work with OS2 and Warp for a while prior to Windoze....) ~o)

I'm tempted to write a utility called dolin, just so I can create a man page for it.

Oh...and that vi is still the 'preferred' editor sort of sums up why *ix has not yet taken over the desktop....

Korn is a pretty cool alt/metal band whose "signature" sound has been the chunky growl of the 7 string guitar...they use a lot of words that require ###'s, though, so not so good for the kids...
