Just reading about Hans Brentrup building an 0-45 and thought if anyone has some pics of mandos and 12 fretters , that would be nice.I love 12 fret instruments, the bridge sits in the sweet spot.. i think we've had cats and chickens and pigs and even overalls before so maybe just gits and mandos this time.. here are some 12 fret compadre's freshly strung relaxing on the couch before some recording.. for those that are interested .. they are a Sumi f-5 dx, a Jackstraw quilt mahogany, a Tippin german / rosewood and a Sumi red spruce / maple. let's see 'em..~o)

Hmm, I'll see if I can get something for you... :)

12-frets are the only things I play these days. Nice instruments!

Behold, the "Gibamazoo" photo! Kept the guitar, sold the mandolin, but they do seem to be brothers, eh?

I would say the same of 12 fret oval hole mandolins!

Here is my Parsons Flat-top, Martin 000-15S and Old Wave Oval A.

PhilTOD here ya go. The Sumi 00-12 was built for the 2008 Tokyo guitar show.It has a 400 year old ( EZO ) red spruce top. select maple back and sides, koa binding and ab purfling. i searched for a long time for a maple 12 fretter, not too many available so i pounced on it. Fliss, nice !! FATT-DAD, what year is the Gibbamazoo ?? thanks to the MODS for allowing us to discuss guitars here although i think they go hand in hand with mandolins...

Bill,Is that a snakewood finger-rest on "The Other"!? Beauty.

I have a couple Weber armrest/tp combos that look a lot like the one on The Other.
Great tailpiece/armrest combo IMHO. Must be a bear to make?

frankenstein, HERE (http://home.comcast.net/~fatt-dad/l-00.html) is about all I know on my 12-fret hog/spruce Gibson. Maybe it's a '29, maybe it's a 36? Maybe it's even some hybrid. It is x-braced and light as a feather. I've owned it for many years (well a couple decades or so. . .) - a gift from my father-in-law, not that he's some guitar dude, just a find at an estate that he settled many years ago. The Kalamazoo is likely a '36 and the new owner loves it. I kept my '84 Flatiron pancake (i.e., 1N) in favor over the Kalamazoo pancake. No regrets.

On the matter of 12 fret guitars, I have two others, a 000-28Norman Blake and a 000-15S. Along with the pancake, my mandolins include my regular player, the '84 Flatiron A5-1 and my old friend the '20 A3. Here's the family shot:

O.K. here's the fronts of the mandolins. . . .

Pay no attention to the 14-fret Taylor ('97 914, Brazilian), it's for sale on some other forum somewhere. . .

Interesting topic!!

Poor photo, GREAT instruments. Guitar was custom built for Chris Hillman (and featured in the Collings' "Serious Guitar" ads); varnish mando was custom built too (no fretboard dots; ebony buttons; birdseye back & sides).http://www.troutstudios.com/collingsmg.jpg

Technically, for mandolins, the "number of frets" is usually counted to the cross piece. So the mandolin in the first picture would be 15 frets to the cross piece. The older A's, F-2s,F-4s,F-7s(?) are 12 to the cross piece.

Well we are a rare breed arn't we.. just to add to the sweet spot comments, also the shorter and usually fatter neck makes the guitar stronger and also more air inside give it a surprisingly loud voice.. i don't get f-4 hybrids..

Well we are a rare breed arn't we.. ...

Yeah, but that doesn't make us wrong :)

FWIW, my two 12 fret parlours were both custom built for me, and so the neck isn't particularly fat. In each case the neck profile is quite shallow, and the nut width 44mm - I'd struggle to cope with anything wider than that!

One thing I particularly enjoy about 12 fret guitars is that the shorter neck gives a more compact feel (more like a mandolin!)
