Does anyone use octave strings on the lower 2 courses of their octave mandos instead of the usual unison? I have a Weber Sage #1, and love the sound of the regular strings, but put on octaves on the lower two to see what it would sound like. I liked the brighter sound. Is that a taboo, or do other people do it also? #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

I always use octave strings on the G and D courses.
Sometimes I also use an octave string on the A course.

What do you use for the A course? Right now I have wound 23's for the A, and with the octaves on the G and D is sounds a little too different, in that the A strings sound muted compared to the other octave strings.

A plain .011 for the octave A would have tension really close to that of the .023 for the normal octave A.
I would try a .010 or an .011 to see which you like the sound of.

Thanks Jacob, I'll try it!
