Well, this one's been a long time coming, and it's still in the white, but it's built, at last! Started over 2 1/2 years ago in London, finished yesterday in Tokyo, with wood from Bruce Harvie (front) and Don Kawalek (back).
My first one from scratch (except the headplate, bought as is off ebay, couldn't be bothered to get into inlaying :sleepy: ). Done mostly afer hours on the living room floor, with cheap hand tools and a drill. Sharpening stone, scrapers and elbow grease... and blood, sweat and tears. A great experience.

The shape and 4-strings inspiration credit goes to Paul Lestock's Jazzbo (http://jazzmando.com/paul_lestock.shtml). I played an early prototype of the jazzbo with Paul at the symposium in 2005, loved it, came home and started this one :mandosmiley:

The sound is strong, full and interesting, it needs fine tuning, but I reckon it will turn out to be pretty good, and it's already lots of fun to play.

Thanks to all who helped with wood, inspiration and advice, now I need to find some time to play it!

Happy Holidays!

Germain,

That looks great, and it's nice to read your voice again. What are the finishing plans? Is it arched or flat? Will there be a pickup? I dig the swoop on the cutaway.

Thanks fellas :)
Jamie, I wish I had more time. As it stands I barely find time to play, let alone enjoy the cafe! I'm still reading quite often though...
It's an archtop, here are a few more pics that show the arch. I even put in a bit of a waist in the back plate, just because it reminded me of a woman's back (minus the cutaway!). No pickup, I don't play well enough to risk hearing myself and being unable to blame the poor microphone for the horrible sound http://www.grandmainger.com/avatars/smileys/violin.gif !
I'll leave the finish clear, blond top, walnut back and sides. I think it has enough colour on its own, and the wood is nice, I'm a big walnut fan. Besides, I already have an Arches blacktop and a Driftwood/Poe tobacco burst, so this one'll fit right in!

@Jason: all it takes is time, then more time. Get yourself an IV kit for $100, build it, and see if you like it! It's fun, and you may well end up with a pretty decent instrument too!

As for me, next in line is my archtop guitar conversion to mandocello, then back to square one for an F4, then a mandola. Prepare yourselves to see these in 5 to 10 years! Cheers! http://www.grandmainger.com/avatars/smileys/drunk1.gif

Wow! I'm even more impressed. It looks wonderful. I love walnut as a back wood too. I'm looking forward to (eventually ;) ) seeing the finished instrument.
