For some of the more interesting mandolin designs, trust Bill Bussmann at Old Wave Mandolins (http://www.oldwavemandolins.com/):

Of course, Mr Bussmann also makes some more regular models, including what is IMO the most beautiful octaves around (http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/showpost.php?p=605456&postcount=3606). Oh, and they sound great too!

Take a look at this old thread (http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1137&highlight=oddities). It has several pages of Funky Mandolins.
My "who the h*!! made this fits into the funky (but cool) category. Maybe Larson Bros. (its in the book) but....no one knows for sure=FUNKY

I agree. The more I look at it, the more I like it. It looks like a cross between a Gibson 3-Point and the Bacon model that Eastman is going to be copying.

It was made by Robert T Cole, in 1980 totally unconventional but has wonderful tone, Carved from all Walnut..yup walnut top too.He built instruments for a short time in the 70's and early eighties.I kinda like the Babitz type of tailpiece/string ancor design.
