This is my first mandolin, made in 1979.
I was trying to learn a lot of things all at once. One of those things was to never do a vine on a fingerboard again.

I did a simple vine on my first mandolin. The leaves and swirls mark the 5th, 7th, 9th, 12th, and 15th frets.

Nice!:whistling: Is that your Sumi? Original fretboard or is that a new one? I always wanted to do just the one section there around the 12th fret. Hmmm... maybe I'll run down to Bryan England's and see what he'd charge for something like that.

Steve, Dave Nichol as mentioned above did the fretboard for me and Mike Blohm was kind enough to use it as most luthiers won't touch something like that.. if it's not their own work.. how's is your birdseye Sumi ? i bet it's great. i was just about to order a 3 point blonde birdseye from him when our dollar crashed.. :crying:

Here isa picture of my Arches. Cody Shuler (Picknpine) of Pine Mtn Railroad is test driving it. He is the one that called this one a "Hoss". Chris Baird builds what you want and how you want it even though he is about 2500 miles from me. A mind Reader, I guess.

I did this one with larger leaves at the key frets. I tend to look at the fretboard too much when I play, so I need the markers. The vine runs from the 7th to the 15th frets.
Here is the vine inlay that I designed in the Unicorn mandolin days slightly redrawn for the Phoenix mandolins. Jenny Warner did all the hand cutting and inlaying on this one and the phoenix on the headstock too.

Depending on your skill level, the intricacies go up, up, up but from what I understand, you plan yout your inlay, you cut the pieces of material (abalone, pearl, wood, turquoise, etc out. You use your dremel and route out the peghead after laying out your template on the wood. You then glue in the pieces just above flush. You fill in the gaps with a mixture of glue and wood powder the same color then you sand it down flush and finish the peghead. For an extra challenge you use silver wire too as in a torch and wire headstock inlay.
There are many sources for precut shapes in a variety of media. Tastefully cut and inlaid designs are as much a work of art and time consuming as building the box!

I sold my mando with vine inlays and I'm sooooo happy. When I went to bluegrass festivals at night I couldn't see the frets b/c there were no dots, just vines!!!!!!!!
I would never get a fancy fret board again. Not to mention, it's hard to watch other peoples fingers and see what they're doing if they have fancy frets.
I like dots.
Dots are nice, But I LOVE Block Fingerboard inlay :)

blocks or dots are cool. Just something to make it easy to know where you are. Probably just me... Doesnt help if you've had a couple beers too.
Found the pic of my 1980s Alvarez A900 and scanned the fingerboard. not as fancy as many of the others posted,but not bad.
