Or perhaps a Kalimba.... (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalimba). Maybe you could slice veggies with it and call it a mandolin. ;)

Very nice and ornate, but if you want to really get into kalimba (or mbira, or thumb piano, whichever you call it), get one of the Hugh Tracy ones. You get an octave-and-a-half scale, they're easily tunable with pliers, and they sound good. I've had my Tracy treble for nearly 40 years (!) and still use it from time to time. Only works in one scale, though (G major).

You should add that to your signature Allen :)

I've always wanted to make an electric version.

If you really want one and don't have the time to build your own you can check out this site. (http://www.ekalimba.com/) Electric kalimbas (kalimbi?) are for sell. :)

Allen,
Is there anything musical you don't own? My brother moved to Rochester a couple months ago and I thought I'd love to go visit Bernuzio's when I visit him but I think I want to come see your collection. :)

Let me know when you're coming; I'll have to clean up a bit. My basement "cave" is always a terminal mess with cases lying all over. I had four gigs over the weekend and had different instrument needs for a couple of them.

I don't own:
1/ Anything with a keyboard
2/ Any brass or woodwind instruments (unless you count a soprano recorder)
3/ Any percussion instruments except the odd tambourine, maraca or shaker egg
4/ Any electric instruments except a Guild Ashbory bass, and one nondescript solid-body mandolin labeled "Jordan"
5/ Any "world" or ethnic instruments except a tourist-grade guitarron and an armadillo-shell charango. Oh, and the Tracy kalimba.

Lotsa guitars, banjos, mandolins, ukuleles, Autoharps and their hybrids and derivatives; three English-system concertinas, a small hammered dulcimer I can't play, a couple zithers ditto, a bunch of harmonicas, a bowed psaltery I've played maybe five times, a mountain dulcimer that's languishing, and an aluminum bass fiddle. About 75 in all.

Seriously, if you're in Rochester (and few people are these days), give me a call; I'm in the book. And do plan to visit
Bernunzio Vintage Instruments (http://www.bernunzio.com/)
Stutzman's Guitar Center (http://www.stutzmansguitarcenter.com/)
Lehmann Stringed Instruments (http://www.lehmannstrings.com/)
-- three wonderful instrument dealers/repair shops/luthiers.
