Some good news to share.

Effectively immediately we're allowing the posting of MP3 sound files with a limit of approximately 9.5MB per uploaded file. It's important that if you're going to be posting these that you read the rest of this post very carefully.

No one wants to get themselves in legal hot water by uploading copyrighted audio--that means you and me. We'll all need to be very careful here, and I'll be personally monitoring these. If you upload these, and trouble comes knocking, it will be the individual user that's liable (ie., DMCA Safe Harbor). However, I don't intend to allow anyone to get themselves in trouble, nor do I think the chances of it happening are very great. The posting guidelines have been modified slightly, and the usage is essentially identical. Adhering to those guidelines is a part of everyone's continuing membership. If in doubt about what to post, please contact me first. This has the potential to take up a lot of disk space, and I'm OK with that as long as it's mandolin specific--keeping in mind that the intent of this forum is not to serve as a free online storage device for personal audio files. Sorry, no cowbell files allowed :).

From our existing guidelines, these were already in place and will serve to guide us in proper use:

- Post only non-copyrighted mandolin-related images/attachments (including audio files). Filling up the board space with images and audio that does not add to our mandolin related subject matter serves no one and creates additional download times for modem users. When in doubt, ask if it's relevant to our community. Pictures of a festival, something personal about a board member or other "member-related" images are typically appropriate when posted with discretion. If in doubt, ask the site owner. We reserve the right to immediately remove any images or audio files that are inappropriate or not relevant to the long-term health and well-being of this community.

- The posting of copyrighted audio files, including offers to sell, purchase, trade or give away copies of copyrighted audio files including bootlegs of live shows is prohibited. This includes links to other sites where these materials can be obtained.

That said, I hope this is a positive new feature and one that is both used and enjoyed. I can see real benefits for this, particularly in the Theory area or the sharing of original and traditional tunes, scales and exercises, etc.

Have fun with it, but please do post with caution. And, be patient. Unless you have some significant bandwidth, it might take awhile to upload some of those large files.

I'm uploading an MP3 below so you can see how these will be displayed.

Excellent, excellent! This is a great feature and one that I have been wanting for some time. I would really like to hear some clips of all of those wonderful mandolin pictures we have.

Thanks Scott! (I'll spare you the clarinet stuff too ;) )

I am looking forward to this. Are you considering a forum especially for MP3's.... like the 'post a picture of your mandolin' forum, or will these MP3's just be sprinkled in the various forums?

They have already started appearing as attachments on the regular message board.

Ah, even more incentive to read through all the various posts on the different forums! Just thought it'd be nice to ALSO have a forum dedicated to mp3s!

But, I see this is the description for the "post a picture" forum:

Post and discuss pictures of your instrument, share sound/video clip links of you and your instrument

Maybe the wording could be expanded to say share sound / video clip links or mp3's of you and your instrument

No plans to have a separate forum. These are simply attachments, so not so different from images, PDFs, etc. There will be valid reasons to have them in different places.

Is anyone else having a minor problem with playing the mp3 files using the Firefox browser?
When I click on the file, the browser sees the file as htl instead of mp3. You can force the browser to use MS media player and click "try to play" and the file will play.
No such problem with Internet explorer.

Any fixes known?

That is a Firefox abnomoly. After I changed mine once it stayed changed. It will also pop up an error saying the filename you are trying to play has an HTM extension but if you click ok and play it works. As you mentioned Internet Explorer doesn't have the problem.

Mike,

Firefox (or Windows, I can't remember which) asks what program to use to play these files. Select the Windows Media Player and that stays as the default program when you click on one of these files in Firefox.

d/l file to desktop. Then edit file name deleting the html. There may be an easier way but this worked for me.

I'm not sure what the html issue is, but not sure I need to. If you download any file to the Mac desktop and do a Control + I (get information), at the bottom of that dialogue window is the option to select what program you want to associate with that file extension, in this case, MP3. I have a Mac OSX version (and a pee cee too :) and have not experienced any problems, but I listen to MP3s all the time on this laptop. It defaults to the QuickTime player.

My suspicion is that your HTML server is serving mp3's with a default mine type of "text/html" rather than tagging it as "audio/mpeg". I believe that Firefox honours the stated mime type supplied by the web server (which is why it wants to open the file as html), where as IE looks first to the local machine to see how to handle files with .mp3 extensions.

Here's a solution MikeB came up with in another thread:

OK. After a discussion with my AppleCare guy (bless them!), he had me simply click on Dan's file. It downloaded with the .html extension. I then just deleted the .html part and it left me with an .mp3.

Not the case. I set the mime type on this one. It's set to: audio/mpeg

No, it's the opposite. The filename (mouse over the link) does not show up as MP3, but the mime header does. I need to see which *specific* one they are using, there are more than one way to specifiy an mp3 in mime with varying results. It's a mess, basically, because there isn't a standard way to play them. Firefox used to do it in browser.. quicktime will take over.. sometimes windows users have media player, sometimes winamp, sometimes itunes..
