I saw in the previous thread about GDGD tuning (also AEAE). There is a guy on Youtube that plays a Gold Tone Tenor guitar in that tuning and is very good at what he does.

My question is what is the purpose or advantages of this type of tuning?

And, as I have recently bought a Mandolin, could I try GDGD tuning on it with good results?

GDGD tuning sounds great when playing in the key of G since you have the 1st and 5th on open strings. You can play the melody and hit open strings for a very full sound. You can also play in D to a lesser extent. From there you rely on a capo for different keys. It won't harm your mandolin to try out the tuning as it lowers the tension but it's less effective if you have to capo a mandolin up at the 5th or 7th fret, for instance.
