In several pics of custom made mandos recently I've noticed the grain running across instead of along the back. Is there any difference sound/structure wise or is this just a visual choice?
Thanks,

Huh??
Can you post links to a pic of a mando back with the "grain running across instead of along the back"??
I've never heard of such a thing....

I bet what you are seeing is the "flame" running across the back...

That's a good guess....

Yeah, you're right. Sorry for the bonehead question. I guess I assumed the flame always ran with the grain.

Flame usually runs 90 degrees or thereabouts to the grain when cut on quarter....
The wood that is in really high demand in the violin world runs at a 45 degree angle to the grain, with big wide flames--the so-called Balkan maple...
When cut on the slab, the flame can run all over the place, and the grain (when well-milled) looks like "puddles" on the face of the instrument...
