I've been to some of the mega music stores and the best I've been able to find are Fenders and mandos of unknown origin. Where can I go to sample the good stuff?

I got my Rigel at Harry's Guitars in Raleigh.

The have a good assortment from Gibson and Weber to the usual Pac Rim stuff.

The best I've found for mandolins in NC are:
Appalachian Music Shopps,LLC in Boone
Mac's Musical Madness in Hickory
Harry & Jeannie West Find Musiscal Instruments in Statesville
Mandolin Central in Siler City (aka Tony Williamson)
Harry probalby has the best at any one time of used F models but is currently slap out of Loars and Ferns.
Last time I was in there I got a Loar Fern.
Tony always has a good assortment but Loars and Ferns don't last an hour there.

While they don't usually stock a lot of mandolins, the last time I was at Fat Sound in Cary they had a Gibson F9, a Collings MF, and a couple of Weber A models.

The Music Barn, on Chapman Street near the Coliseum in Greensboro, has a nice selection - sometimes. They're a Gibson dealer and the last time I was in they had a new Flatiron Festival F (yes, Gibson still makes them as a special order), a new, never bought, really nice Flatiron Artist F, a Wayne Benson, several new Gibson F-5Gs, a used Weber Yellowstone, and other new and used of lesser quality. You never know what you'll find there.

Jeff Foxhall gives mandolin lessons there, too - he's one of the best.
