Hi all!

Tomorrow my first oldtime jazz session takes place, and I'm asked to come as an electric bass player. It's a band with two guitar players, a piano/organ player a tenor banjo player, a singer, and me.

On some sings I have to play mando, and I was wondering,

Should I follow the banjo player in playing chords, or should I rather do some jazz-fiddle thing, trying to add some melodic lines?

We do not play instrumentals, just songs, like Doctor Jazz, Who's Sorry now etc.

Any help is welcome http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I don't usually play chords on standards. I use a lot of double stops to embellish the chords and put some (hopefully) tasteful Joe Venuti-ish runs in.

The melody line approach is a lot of fun as long as you don't overplay, which I tend to do!
