Who has the best signature line? Just a fun poll.

I'm glad you brought that up. Let's review the posting guidelines for signature lines. It is as follows:

· A board 'signature' space is available for use and attached to each post you make. In keeping with the guidelines of this site, please refrain from attaching signatures or images with sexual, political or religious references.

Let's all review our signature lines to see if they might run contrary to any of these posting guidelines. Keep in mind that the political section might include historical events that could be hot button issues.

If you want to bash the moderators, please start a separate thread for that purpose. That makes their job easier. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Thank you Martin, we do appreciate that. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I might add this little tidbit as well:

Discussions started with the specific purpose or that end up used specifically for the purpose of antagonizing or calling into question a moderator's control of this forum or the site owner's right to enforce the board policy is forbidden, and may result in immediate and permanent loss of membership and posting privileges.

Wow, that sounds like a blast. I was just about to create a signature line about prohibition until you said that. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif I like Daniel Nestlerode's one that about there being a 20% chance we are living in a computer simulation.

This one is used by a gentleman on the co-mando mailing list. #I couldn't agree more!!

"....whether we congregate as a small ensemble or symphony orchestra, in living rooms, barns, coliseums or opera houses, our function is not merely to entertain, but to communicate to one another through a medium that is unparalleled in it's ability to influence the feelings of the masses. I cannot think of a more important occupation to have chose than that of musician."

More precisely, the quote is attributed to Robert Wilensky as follows:

We’ve all heard that a million monkeys banging on a million typewriters will eventually reproduce the entire works of Shakespeare. Now, thanks to the Internet, we know this is not true.

I also like this one, which I've used on another discussion board:

It's funny with signature lines. #I try and use quotes sometimes. #I used to list my instruments. #There have been some folks who think listing instruments was a form of bragging, never an intention of probably 99% of those who list.

I liked jimmacd old one of "Carpe Cervesa" #He now uses Carpe Plectrum.

Jamie, I think the instrument lists are precisely bragging. When I was fairly new here, I had my Eastman listed because I thought it would stand me in good stead on the board. Now that I have a Fullerton, I no longer care what kind of stead I'm in on the board and it's a good thing, because that wouldn't do it. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

JB,

I'm a good mandolin buyer. #I've been outplayed by folks on Johnson plywood scroll models costing 1/10th what I may have spent on mine. #I would never confuse the cost of an instrument with the skill of the player. #

I only listed mine so it would be clear that I owned an instrument I may have been talking/reviewing about. #Maybe I can make my signature, I post better than I pick! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

No plan to use it. My signature hasn't changed in over a year and probably isn't going to.

My second choice would be the famed Sam Rayburn quote, and I often use it in describing the running of this site and why my tolerance level can dip to the low end from time to time when dealing with problem users:

"There's no education in the second kick of a mule."

I don't think instrument lists are bragging. #Afterall, the mandolin and the music you can create is what we're all here for. #It would be kinda like being a member of a motorcycle forum and not telling people what you ride. #Also, I've been recognized by other 'cafe members at jams because they had seen my sig line. #

If you don't wanna list what you have, that's cool. #Mine come and go for sure. #But I think very few people here do it to pound their chests and get attention. We're just mando nuts. If we can't share our passion (or addiction) as it may be, then where can we? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

Hmm, I hadn't thought of the guideline interpretation, but I would certainly vote for JeffD as having the .sig line I enjoy the most here on the Cafe.

As to listing instruments, I've always refrained to list mine (on any list), not so much to avoid bragging, but because my paranoid brain doesn't want just anyone knowing what I keep inside my house!

cheers,

David

I used to have a quote from a charactor of an Ayn Rand novel that use to throw some folks into fits of rage.

I use to get lot's of dribble drabble of insults in the INBOX/ PM but one lunatic took it way over the edge and too far.

So I've finally decided on the Texas Factoids. I don't care if people like 'em or not, I'm just a geek for useless information.

The line is, and should be, where ever Scott wants it. This place is, and should be, a benign dictatorship. That is its success.

If Scott thinks it should be changed, I offer the following:

"If I am not playing music you will find me at work, church, or fishing."

I've never used it, but I've been tempted when I've seen the occasional#declaration of personal expertise...

Or, perhaps, "turn down the 'suck' button"? #As in this Far Side cartoon. # (http://snaps.lumra.com/~The_Suck_Button)

In regard to this thread as a whole, I'm not sure it's going anywhere useful. #I list my mandolins, not to brag (well, not much), but to get the responses I get every now and then. #I treasure Butch Baldassari's off-site e-mail asking what I thought of my Howe-Orme mandolinetto. #I think that signatures say a bit about their authors and their attitudes, from the self-promoting to the smart-a*s to the pompously pontifical. #Other than that, where are we going with this?

Sorry to have to lock down what has been an interesting thread, but after the 5th (4 deleted by poster) public attempt to micromanage board policy, it's become more of a chore supervising than it's worth.

Apologies to those of you who found it interesting.
