I'm thinking of having a local guy build me a 5 string emando, can anyone point me to a site that details the specifics as far as neck length, width, fret spacing, etc.
where to get pickups, etc.

Um, if your local guy really lacks that many clues, you might be better off going with an established builder.

If he builds electric guitars, and can layout a fret spacing sequence formula from scratch, accurately, maybe ,
Shorter scales, different intonation.
less off the shelf stuff for bridges.
Local?, takes well to mid course customer supervision?

scale: nut to bridge;off my acoustics; Mandolin 14" mandola 17", etc
#FWIW, my 14" 4 string solid body set up with 4 heavy Ga. mandola strings viola CGDA pitch.

I built a five string and chose to split the difference between 'dolin and 'dola scale lengths. Too long. Couldn't get even an .008 up to pitch. I reckon 15" or just under would do it.

Electric mandolin 5-string recipe:
1.Measure distance between edge of fretboard and midway between 5th and 6 th string at 12th fret of your favourite guitar. This gives you your nut width
2 Use mandolin 13 7/8 " scale length.
3 Aquire "strat non trem" style tailpiece and hacksaw off 1/6 of the width.
4 Aquire pick up with 'blades" not pole pieces.
5 Use common sense in all decisions.

This system worked for me
