Mandolins and tejano music

Wednesday I had the opportunity to get up on stage and play my japanese made Shiro with one of the best accordionists in Texas, Joel Guzman. Check out his collaboration with Joe Ely in "Live at the Cactus" Had a great time. That's me on the far right. Mandolins do appear in unexpected places.

I love tejano music--it helps that my wife is Mexican-American.

On my forthcoming solo CD, I'm going to have her mother sing a traditional Mexican ranchera. I'm also going to do a tune called Flora de Huevos, which Los Lobos recorded on their very first album, a tune which sounds great on mandolin.

I'm totally jealous!!! It's a shame that there are not enough mando players in the Tex-Mex scene.

One time I had a chance to sit in with my mandolin on a few songs with a mariachí band down in El Porvenir, Chihuahua Mexico. It was one of the best musical experiences that I had ever had.

I've sat in with a several of mariachis, and cannot understand why there aren't more mandos in this style of music. It fits right in with both the guitars and the violins. I've only seen one mariachi that had a mandolin, a bowlback that sounded just fine.

John, it's very cool that you got to sit in with Joel Guzman. That guy can burn up an accordion.

Los Lobos first cd is a fav of mine to play along with...some of the best music made by them for sure!
