I'd been thinking for a while that I'd like a really good A5 style to contrast with my Phil Davidson flat top, and I'd also admired photos I've seen here on the Cafe of Keith Newell's work. So when Keith recently advertised a beautiful used A-style in the classifieds, I pounced on it!

So this is my new mando - built by Keith in 2005, red spruce and big leaf maple. I've only had it a few days, so these are only my initial impressions but - my first impression is that it's absolutely beautiful. The quality of it just shines out, and the wood is gorgeous. I really like the look of Keith's mandolins, and this one with its clean lines and tortoise binding is no exception. I also love the one-piece tailpiece, I find this kind of taipliece much easier to use than the Gibson type, and I like the look better, too.

The tone is still developing, since it had been de-tuned for a little while before it came to me, but it's already lovely and a great contrast to my flat top, which is also lovely but in an entirely different way. The flat top's tone is rich and complex, whereas the Newell is crisper and more cutting. Both are loud and have very good sustain; the Newell is louder, I think.

The playability is also excellent, with a lovely low action and a radiused fretboard which I like.

I'm going to have some fun with this one http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Congratulations on your new addition. It is very beautiful (for that matter so is its companion--Phil Davidson). I look forward to hearing how the tone settles in for you.

Sweet! I've admired Keith's work from afar for a long time now. I'd love to actually get to play one sometime. Enjoy. ...

Fliss,
What a stunning mandolin!
I love the amber colour and the whole thing just reeks of class.
It looks great next to the Davidson and I imagine that it's nice to own two such tonally contrasting mandolins.

Congratulations on your top quality Trans-Atlantic MAS.

i agree ... a stunningly beautiful instrument - gorgeous wood, back and front, a sound sample would be nice but it's one of those instruments where you can imagine what it sounds like, simply by looking at it.

mega complimenti!

Thanks guys. #Yes, it sounds pretty much as it looks #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif #I'll try and do some recording though, once it's settled in a bit more.

The other thing I should mention is the condition which is absolutely pristine.

Lovely. Congratulations. That one looks an awful lot like mine, which I couldn't be happier with. Keith Newell makes a mean mandolin. Enjoy.

Okay, I've now had this mando for a week and a half, so I decided it's time I tried a recording:

For comparison, here is the same tune played on my Davidson flst top:

I don't know, that Davidson sounds pretty dang sweet to me, but I can tell the Newell already cuts a little more and is only going to get better with time.

At least you don't have to choose between the two!

Thanks! Yes, I'm very happy to have both http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

DryBones - it's the Trumpet Hornpipe

it's the Trumpet Hornpipe
More commonly known to countless UK kids as the theme tune from "Captain Pugwash"!

Nice playing and tone comparison Fliss. To my ears, the Newell sounds almost harpsichord-like at times while the Davidson has a lovely, "woody" note attack. Having both instruments gives you a broad mandolin sound pallete to choose from.

(I'd bet that they sound really good together, either doubling or harmonising parts.)

Thanks for making the effort to record them both and posting the results.

Keith's got a really sharp looking new black-top in the classifieds.
