Thanks to everyone who took a chance on the mandolin I donated to the Wildlife West festival in Edgewood NM a while back, it was won by a young man from Albuquerque in spite of all the tickets I bought in my neighbors name, and the raffle proceeds helped greatly to fund the festival.
Below find a pic of the other one I built this summer to donate to the Mimbres Regional Arts Council in Silver City NM to help fund the 1st annual pickamania festival, info on the festival at http://www.mimbresarts.org/pickamania.html

And my crudely edited youtube of Steve Smith taking it for a test drive

Bill,

You deserve a big congratulations for your generosity. I'm sure a lot of your blood, sweat and tears (hopefully no blood) goes into building every OldWave. I wonder how often the big factory operations are that generous.

Bill,
That's the coolest looking pickguard that I've seen for an A model.

Thanks, Steve Smith is not only a great picker and inspiration to mandostudents, but he was inducted into the pickamania hall of fame nearly 20 years ago when it was just a party here at Gopher Broke farm in Oldwave Holler.

I'd sure like to get in on this raffle, but it seems they sure don't make it easy, or maybe I'm missing something.First you have to create an account, then when you go thru the checkout process, you find(I found) they only accept paypal. I don't do paypal. Guess I'm not in on this one.

The raffle ends just before Robin and Linda Williams' 4:30 set on sunday sept 14.
Don- you might email Faye (the arts council pres and festival instigator) directly at faye@mimbresarts.org and see if she can facilitate mail entry. TIA
Sort of a before pic of the raw materials, spruce, sycamore, walnut, all the imperial stout has been consumed!

Beautiful mandolin Bill -- I look forward to winning it. ;)

BTW, I'm not sure if anyone else ran into this problem when trying to pay for the raffle tickets, but I received the following error from PayPal when the raffle site was handing off my purchase to PayPal -- however I received confirmation of my order from the raffle host:

Unable to process payment. Please contact the merchant as the shipping address provided by the merchant is invalid, and the merchant has requested that your order must be shipped to that address.

I forwarded the info on to the raffle web site, but wonder if anyone ran into this and has a workaround so I can ensure that I pay for my raffle tickets?

Bill,

Will that beauty be on display at Pickamania?

Really nice mandolin! I take it you don't have to be present to win. Are there any rules that I should be aware of before I buy some tickets?

oldwave maker
Aug-27-2008, 1:28pm
Keith- it will be on display and I suspect there will be mandolinists circulating in the crowd playing it and selling tickets.
Glad to hear you can phone it in!
I can see the headline now- Bigtuna rides old wave! The only rule I know is dont buy tickets in your own name if you're related to Faye or me! Hoping the winning ticket is bought for a kid upgrading from his starter mando, and not won by a 90 yr old with severe arthritis of the hands like the last one I donated to our local public radio station raffle a decade ago! hint,hint...
I traded my rancher neighbor the 5th mandolin I made for this canyon black walnut tree. It had died in the 70's and almost all the bark had fallen off by the time I harvested it in 1991. 30" base diameter, first branches 12' off the ground. Took 3 4' long chunks to another rancher with a woodmizer and he smoked a blade per cut in quartering the chunks. The density of the only sample I measured was close to brazilian rosewood, way heavier than the illinois river valley black walnut I had used previously.
The arizona sycamore on the binding was from a 36" diameter branch that fell right alonside another neighbors house around that same time. A friends case backhoe almost tipped over trying to lift an 8 foot section of that fresh limb. It sure would have flattened that stickframe house!

So by that account this mandolin may be a little heavy http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif Are you brining it up to Pagosa?

The mandolin looks and sounds wonderful. #I'll have to get another ticket or two. #Had no problem a couple of days ago with Pay Pal.

Edit: No problem again today http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I bought my ticket using Paypal. No problem creating an account, just gave the usual shipping/contact info. They did add a $3.95 shipping charge to the $5.00 ticket cost but I got around that by selecting "will call" on the shipping option. Guess I'll have to drive to New Mexico this fall if I win. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

You're welcome to stay in oldwave holler on your way to pick it up, but PJ already told me he's bought the winning ticket!
That toll free # to get a ticket without going thru paypal is 1-888 758-7289. Thanks again to everyone who has helped to bring this wonderful acoustic music down to New Improved Mexico......

Bill,

I really like your take on the F holes. #The traditional shaped ones seem to lack the graceful curves that your design adds to the instrument.

Sorry gang, but I bought the winning ticket! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

I suspect the Mimbres regional arts council volunteers will be too busy with the festival itself after 10pm greenwich mean time this friday to process any more phone-in or internet raffle ticket purchases.
I'd like to thank Scott T. for this bandwidth opportunity to wallow in unabashed fundraiser shilling for a smalltown festival featuring fine mandolin players like Steve Smith, Paul Rangell, John Teer, Charlie Alfero, Carolann Sobello, and Chris Brashear.
A last shot of the curly walnut and turquoise wave peghead before the floodwaters of Spirit river rise and carry us to the old Rio Grande on El Vez the marine plywood upright bass......
