What's the best/lamest excuse you ever used when bringing a new instrument home?

Mine was "look honey, it has your maiden name on the headstock"

First, I have to get my wife to change her maiden name to Nugget.

Lol. That's awesome and I bet it totally diffused the tension.

Mine was that I needed tonal variety. That didn't go over so well.

Wow. The ring I bought has "paid for itself" many times over, thank you very much.

Jeez. I'm fairly certain that was a joke. Lighten up.

I'll never need another one....

Followed by her saying, "That's what you said the last 3 times."

Me: "Yeah, but this time I mean it" http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I've used the line "I got it as a back up to the good one. Of course now that I have way too many back ups I have trouble selling that line anymore!

Don:

You have to be the "Yoda" of explaining new mandolin purchases! LOL. If you have the magic formula, please let us in on it! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

"I'll get what I paid for it when I sell it. Think of it as cheap rent."

This actually worked with a mandola that I kept and used for two years. YMMV, and it's more likely to work with used mandos than new.

I usually don't give an excuse - i give a reason that usually goes something like :- " if i died tomorrow you'd be sorry for not letting me buy this Loar & it was only $225,000 " (£112,000 UK)- Seriously,my wife has NEVER complained about me buying a musical instrument, she's too busy trying to find a pair of shoes among her 1500 pairs (seems like !) that she has (only joking),but she never HAS complained, she knows that it would be futile
& as long as everything else is ok - no problem !,
Saska

faced with infidelity of that magnitude, pete, i think you could dispense with excuses altogether.

we just have a deal....new mandolin for me...then she gets to buy something of equal value for herself. She got some nice jewelry while we were overseas and I was buying a few mandos ! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/coffee.gif

I need one to travel with. It worked for me. He asked how much was it? I always knock it down a few dollars. I don't know why I feel the need to do that. It's just a little white lie. If I have to sell it well.... look how much the price went up. That was a good investment. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I have not had to but, I could do the amortized cost of the last one if I really wanted to. It's kind of like the diamond ring thing for an anniversary.
"It's 7,200.00 you've been married for 30 years, that is only $240. a year, or $20 month, or $5 a week, or just 71 cents a day!" Husbands cringe, wives laugh out loud.
