i'm not overly familiar with bluegrass - the music or its stars - but in the "post a photo of ..." section of the forum, in the "women with mandolins" thread, there's a photo of rhonda vincent in which she appears to be playing without a pick ... or possibly with a thumb-pick.

could anyone please clear this up for me?

thank you - bill

Is it really bluegrass if you don't use a pick?

I took the photo and she had broke a string and she laid her mandolin down for her fiddle player to restring it for her. When he did he handed the mandolin back to her without the pick while she was singing when she finished the song she went over and got her pick and continued the festival she was not playing without her pick my camera just happened to catch her without it.

The explanation of the pick question was possibly the most direct, concise, complete and authoritative answer I have read in some time.

Except, what song was she singing when the string broke, and what if not overalls was she wearing?

Dang Cameras! Always there when something happens!! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

The weird thing is that she broke a heel at the very same time her string broke and she still went on with the show, never missing a beat!http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif Just kidding, there.

Wish I could hand off my instruments to 'someone else' whenever they needed restringing. Starting with the 12-string!! LOL http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
