These are sure pretty. I like the one on the left, with the one piece back and the more subtle brown 'burst. Very nice!

I have a friend who has a C. Horner that just jumps out at you when played in front of you and you can feel it vibrate on your belly when you play it. Great instrument. There is one that is at Gruhn's now. Been there a long time and not as spectacular. But my friend's is to die for.

how did ya date the spruce?

By counting the growth rings when in log form or by core drilling a standing tree.

The wood was sourced in '85 from a landfill in Sevier County where the park contractor has deposited the logs after clearing HWY 441 near Newfound Gap.

Didn't Lynn Dudenbostel learn mando building from Mr. Horner?

I will let Mr. Horner know, Tony. He gets $3500 per F-5. He told me last week that he would sell both for $6000.

I first saw Mr. Horner's mandolins several years ago, and have always wanted one. I have seen the Horner at Gruhn's, but it doesn't appear to have an adjustable tross rod. If Charles reads this, send me an e-mail, and we'll talk about getting one of these beauties in my hands.
Are these two shown in the pictures currently for sale anywhere?

Mikey G,

I sent you a private message with my contact regarding these instruments. Yes, both are currently available. The one below is just about available.

he's up in Westel (or somewhere just outside of Rockwood) isn't he? I'd like to check one out next time I'm in Roane County.

Also, to F5 GWiz...According to the Dude's MySpace site, Charles Horner was the Dude's biggest inspiration launching him into mando building. Dave

DC,

Thats a beautiful headstock. Mr. Horner says that the green abalone is very hard to get.

I played Dave Dyer's Horner F-5 two years ago at Winfield and I really was impressed by it. Dave has owned it forever and it really looks played but it sounded very vintage and just fabulous. I had barely heard of Horner mandolins at the time but have been on the lookout for one ever since. Don't see very may on the cafe.

First off, Goose, I have not financial interest in the sales of a Horner, but I am trying to let people know that Charles is still a very prolific builder of F and A style mandolins. These instruments posted are just a few of the ones he has available.

I can try to help with shipping if needed.

I call this one the Horner Presentation Model. The rope binding is made from ebony and Holly.

Here is the one that John Hartford bought off the shelf in Mr Horner's shop. It is presently for sale at Gruhn's Guitars in Nashville for $5K.
