Just came across this on Craigslist. Let me say, I have no interest in this case, neither buying nor selling. But I thought the mandolin community should see it.

Moved to the correct section.

Oooh, I love it! Especially the location of the handle!

The seller is right; few modern mandolins are square.

Love all that suspension padding. Should be airline friendly. Put a mandolin in and out comes a perfect Monroe post- poker distressed model. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

It looks like it was inspired by the Memphis art movement.

Isn't that an OHSC for a Heimer Puffy? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

The old Heimer puffy-5. Who can ever forget that mando? He turned more heads then Loyd Loar with that one.

One of my favorite lines in an eBay auction is "This is a family heirloom so I'm not going to let it go cheap".

I think for posterity, this photo needs a home here.

When the people at Calton see that, expect a major design change.

I can't get a definitive fix on size from the photo because there's no identifiable reference that I can ascertain but doesn't it look, um...a little large? I mean, how big is the headstock on old Grandpa's mandolin anyway? And how tall you gotta be to tote that behemoth around without dragging it on the ground? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Looks more like a mondolin coffin than a case.

Looks like a perfect fit fot one of Mr. Bussmanns watermelon models!

Hey Mike, Thanks for moving my thread to the proper section. I did not realize there was category for EBAY, Craigslist, etc.

It is kind of hard to tell the size of the case. That looks like the wall and door of a metal building or storage place behind it.

I have a good friend who's a heckuva banjo picker, who tries to buy as little as he can (wish I suffered from that!) - so, when his banjo case wore out, he made a wood case for it almost exactly like this one. While it's bulky, not waterproof, not shockproof, and heck, not much of anything compared to a good manufactured mando case, it certainly does fit his style, and for that, I love it!

That's not a metal storage building behind it. That's the case he built for his piano. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

I'm gonna guess that the handle is like a screen door/cabinet handle.

I've made some cases for odd-sized/shaped instruments (bowl-back mandola, bowed psaltery, National Triolian, Polk-A-Lay-Lee). I use garage door handles. My cases are terrible -- awful -- maybe not as badly shaped as this one, but really crude. However, they do the job of protecting the instrument. I do use foam to line them, however, rather than gluing little squares of whatever to the inside.

Also, I seldom put the garage door handle on the end of the case.

Well, the master craftsman that made my matchstick top banjo, crafted the hand made case out of paper mache. Pretty cool, IMHO.

A friend of mine used to carry his 2 fiddles and their bows in a 5-gallon bucket. that gave him an automatic seat to sit on. No, I'm not gonna mention usernames here http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

The philosopher Wittgenstein was also an accomplished clarinet player. He carried his clarinet around in an old wool sock.

Was this made while in prison?

I sort of like the case as cubist art.

With that case on the stage there wouldn't be room for the banjo player. Hey! where can I get one.
